Referring to the announcement made
of the return of gold to this country it
says:
The golden eagles of America are
flying home. Baring. Magonn A Co.
shipped by the steamship Columbia,
from Southampton, £100,000 in Ameri
can gold coin. This is belierep to be
the actftal turning of the golden tide
towards the United States. The ebb of
golif practically ceased two weeks ago,
and now the flood is in motion.
M Fhis harbinger of better times was
not the only feature of the day in Wall
street, Ainong other things of note, the
Cordage Trust Reorganization commit

Villard stepped down and ontsideasa
moving power in current financial af

“It was a hot and busy day in Wall
street. The announcement of the ship
ment of American gold sent prices
climbing upward. Then the loan com
mittee of the clearing house sent out
word that certificates to the amount of
1.950.000 had been taken on{ by the
ew York banks to help the general
credit. Something like confidence was
felt once more in Wall street.
Since Jan. 1, 1893: there has been a
net export of gold from this country of
more than $63,000,000. Imports fell
away, for merchants saw that people
were not disposed to bny heavily when
they did not feel rich; prices of specula
tively held goods like wheat and pork
fell to a point which tempted the hun
gry mouth of Europe, and pnrehases of
these staples were in order. There was
a readjustment of the rate of exchange
until it did not pay even the quickest
money changer to buy American gold
here and practically sell it in the Euro
pean markets.
“There was some talk that the ship
ment. of gold had been made, simply as
a tonic at somewhat of a sacrifice in or
der to restore confidence and cater to
that sentiment which plays so larg<
part in financial move?. Baring, Mag

ordered because at current prices for
eagles at the Bank of England and the
figures at which bills of exchange could
be purchased to meet the shipment
there was a profit in the transaction.
“From the west came stories of finan

Chicago, June 33.—Turkey’s fire de
partment at the World’s Fair made its
first run to a fire when a cook in the
kitchen of the German village spilled a
pan of grease into the fire and it blazed
up at a furious rate. A guard seeing
the smoke turned in a calL for the fire
engines.
The Turkish sedan chair carriers,
who act as firemen when it is necessary,
saw the blaze. It would never do to go
to a fire in the dress of a chair carrier,
so the first thing they did was to change
their clothing. Then they got hold of
their band fire engine and walked across
the street. They put the engine down
carefully and began to look for some
water. They talked fast and worked
slowly.
Meanwhile the fire department came
flanging into the village. The Turks
■:ried to explain that they were bossing
the fire, but they were pushed aside and
the fire was promptly extinguished.
Then the Turks dragged their engine
away, and talked all the afternoon
about how tlmy had saved the German
village.

Ex-GOvernor Robinf on Firmly Believes
In L'zzle Borden’s Innucense.
Springfield, Mass., Jnne 22— Ex-
Goverqpr Robinson returned to his
home, in Chicopee.. last evening, the
first time since the great Borden trial.
In conversation upon that subject he
said:
‘•The verdict in the Borden case was
a righteous one. I have had but ohe
opinion since I first talked with Miss
Borden— that is that she is innocent. I
have seen her a great many times, too,
and she was very near to me. The ju
rors had made up their minds and were
resdy to render a verdict before they
loft their seats. Bnt they thought it
would not be entirely within the bounds
of propriety unless they retired, and
they did so. Miss Borden has said to
me that the Borden murders were as
much a mystery to her as to any one. I
can only account for the wide-spread
difference of opinion among the people
of the country as to her innocense or
guilt in this way: Before the trial,
there were all sorts of conclusions
formed, based on anything but the evi
dence in the case. Daring the trial, I
received about fifty letters from cranks
confessingtte Borden murders.’’
for made instantly payable in San Fran
cisco. The remainder of the currency
went forward as usual. The south sent
many requests for aid. not always ac
companied by the proper sort of’secu
rity. Out from Los Angeles came the
report that the banks had formed a sort
of clearing honse association, and had
resolved to shut up business until the
citizens got over their scare.
•Reading canght a reprieve, and in
•spite of confessing that it was hopeless
ly entangled in debts and duns, those
in control may have a few more days to
convince bondholders that they should
give’ up a good slice of what they have,
rather than go in and let the law take
its course in finding ont what there re
ally is of valne in this immense Read
ing concern.
“Cordage came out with a confession
of wbat little there really was in it, and'
then presented an elaborate scheme for
patting the property . into some sem
blance of vitality again. It is very in
structive to note the difference between
this apologetic statement, with all its
little efforts to make the Cordage trust
out as a real business enterprise, and
the confident tone of the document
which the Cordage trust folks presented
at the stock exchange when the appli
cation for listing the stock was made.
That was in January, 1891, and now, in
Jnne, 1893, without anything worthy
of the name of report or statement in
the interval, the Cordage comes ont
with the practical acknowledgment
that the period of darkness covered
many deeds of- darkness unworthy of
basinets men conducting a great enter
prise chartered by a great state.”
