Strong Rmiom Why the Barnesvllle
Paper Thinks the Present Minis*
I ter to Hawaii Should Be
the Next Governor.
Barnesvii.tjj, Jnly 1.—The Blount
boom for governor lias been launched.
The Gazette^of this place, formally
places in nomination as the next chief
executive of Georgia tne distin;fished
ex-congressman from the sixth district,
and present minister to Hawaii.
Barnesville was a Blount stronghold
in the days when he used to be re
elected to congress every two years for
20 years, and the people here heartily
re-echo the Gazette’s summons to him
to enter the race for governor.
The following is The Gazette’s edito
rial:
Blnnnt for Governor.
The Gazette nominates as its prefer
ence for governor of Georgia, the Hon.
Janies H. Blount of Macon.
“Wo do so because we think the times
call for a man of the most sterling in
tegrity, a statesman of the most emi
nent qualifications; a man who is fully
in sympathy with the people. We do
so because we have the profoundest re.
spect for his honesty; the utmost confi
dence in his ability: the strongest com-
memla’ion for his 20 years’ conduct in
congress as tlie representative of tho
Sixth district; and because we think
the people of Georgia desire to see him
in the gubernatorial chair.
“We do so because we think he is the
naan of all men at the present time who
in in every way worthy of the honor,
who deserves it, and who will magnify
the dignity of the office to the highest
degree.
“Wo are perfectly satisfied that it is
the duty of the people of the state to
make lion. James H. Blount the next
governor of the state of Georgia, and
we must earnestly hope to see such a
result.”
Mr. Blount’s friends here seem to
think there is no doubt of his being in
the race. —-
The following item, clipped from the
Ft. Madison (Iowa) Democra’, contains
information well worth remembering:
“Mr. John Rotb, of this city, who met
with an accident a few days ago, sprain
ing and bruising his leg and arm quite
severely, was cured by one 50 cent bot
tle of Cbamberlain’s Pain Balm “

“Yes” said the man who was
log the green goggles, “I’ve never had
anything but bad luck. I’ve worked
hard all my life and only made a bare
living. My health broke down years
ago, most of my friends have died off or
moved away. I’ve got literary and ar
tistic tastes and can’t gratify them,
every thing I undertake is a failuae
and I don’t seem to be of sny use in the
world.”
Have you no friends with political
influence enough to get some kind of
easy Job for you ?” inquired the man in
tne shat gy ulsters.
“I’ve tried that. Every time I get a
position a politioal landslide comes
o ig and I get thrown out.”
Can’s you open an intelligence office
or start a real estate- agency ?” asked
the man in the slouch hat. “That sort
of thing doesn’t require any capital.
*I’ve tried that coo. Got burnt out
in one case and a partner ran off with
the profits in the other. No use.”
Ever try canvassing?” inquired the
man who bad his feet on the window-ail’.
Yes often. Had a good suit of

GENERAL NEWS.
Washington, July 1.—The develop
ments with regard to silver have been
in accordance with the expectations of
both the president and Secretary Car
lisle. They agree that the pyice of bul
lion will now rapidly decline. The gov
ernment of course in its future pur
chases will get the benefit of the falling
market. But nothing will he done by
the government to ptill depress the
market. Bullion under the Sherman
law will be bought, as heretofore, at
the lowest market figure, and this will
continue until congress directs the pur^
chases to cease.
Meanwhile the great question is that
of the extra session.
The president is still receiving nu
merous letters and telegrams urging
him to call congress together immedi
ately. No new arguments are advanced,
bnt gre'at emphasis is laid on the Indian
episode in support of the old ones which
he has many times heard. These ap
peals are ail in vain. Mr. Cleveland
end his cabinet are in fall agreement
on the subject
The president will adhere to his pro
gram as originally prepared, and mem
bers of congress who have talked with
him on the subjeet agree that the first
Monday in September is the day fixed
for the beginning of the extra session.
This will enable senators and represen
tatives to thoroughly prepare them
selves for the long absence from their
private affairs which the response to
the call will entail. The best belief
here is that the extra session will run
into tho regular session, and that not
before Jnly next will final adjournment
be possible. The tariff question will
follow the silver question, and together
they will necessarily consume a great
deal of time.
The president will write his special
message to congress in August.
Visiting congressmen continue to ex
press themselves in favor of the repeal
of the Sherman act, Wheeler and
Cobb, of Alabama, and Richardson, of
Tennessee, have so recorded themselves,
Mexico May Stop Coinage
A rumor has been current in the
treasury that Mexico contemplated
stopping the free coinage of silver. It
could not be traced and is not generally
credited. Mexico has a circulation of
about $50,000,000, of which not more
than $5,000,000 is gold. Tho gold pro-
duction last year was less than $1,500,-
000, of which nearly $900,000 was ex
ported. Ia the present state of Mexi
can finances it is not clear if she aban
doned the silver standard how she
could go upon a gold basis.
Minister Romero when advised of
the rumor said that he had no informa
tion to that effect and did not believe
that Mexico could afford to stop the
free coinage of silver.
He therefore placed no credence
whatever in the report. He declined
to forecast the effect of the action of
India in stopping the free coinage of
silver, but said that it was a serious
matter.

Five Hundred Men Scramble for Six V»*
enneie* at a llatliinz Ifvaort.
New York, July 1.—Ferdinand Fish,
a real estate agent, bad a remarkable
experience, caused by Inserting a news
paper advertisement, wanting six men
to go to a bathing resort near this city,
When Mr. Fish reached his office at
about 8 a. m., a crowd of at least 509
men surrounded the building, blocking
all that part of Broadway. Men were
packed on the sidewalk as tightly as
they possibly could be jammed, and
two policemen and the janitor of the
building were struggling vainly against
the vanguard, which was surging up
the high stepB of the building, endeav
oring to get inside. Mr. Fish got into
the building through a rear entrance
and found himself iu despair.
They’re all after those jobs,” said
the boy.
Then Mr. Fish got frightened too.
“Great Scott,” - said he, “something
must be done quickly before they carry
away tho building.” So he rushed out
and picked ouf six men in the hallway.
Then he stood in the doorway and
waived both hands to the army outside,
signaling to them that he had secured
his men.
After the big crowd had dispersed
men came into the office all day long
eagerly asking whether the positions
had been filled yet. When they were
told “yes” they turned in a tired, hope-,
less way that was very touching. Some
begged Mr. Fish to take their names in
case the successful applicants would
not suit. He said yesterday: “It was
one of the saddest things I evei met
with.”
•I never realized before bow hard
the times must bo and how they must
have crushed many people. The jani
tor said that the men began coming
about (1 o’clock in the morning.
