A Queer Trad*.
In Dr. Pryde’s t>ook, “Pleasant Memories
of a Busy Life,” just issued by Messrs.
Blackwood, is a good story, which, if not
new, will at least hear repetition, of the
late Adam Black, founder of the well
known publishing house and a member of
parliament for Edinburgh. One day soon
after Mr. Black commenced business as a
bookseller a suspicious looking man came
stealthily into his shop, and leaning over
tbo counter whispered into his ear, “I’ve
got some fine smuggled whisky, which I’ll
let you have at n great bargain.”
“So, no," said Mr. Black indignantly,
I want nothing of the kind. Go away.”
The man evidently believing in the sin
cerity of this righteous outburst leaned
over the counter again and whispered, “I’ll
tak' Bibles for’t.”—Westminster Gazette.

It is related that come 2Q years ago a negro
youth left his mother's cabin on the Georgia
coast and drifted to Washington, where, by
his industry and enterprise, he rose from
the position of waiter in a restaurant to be
it* proprietor, and at last, with one invest
ment and another, became a rich and in
fluential man.
His old mother was naturally proud of
him, and when some one from Washington
visited her nnd praised her son, telling her
how prominent a man he had become, she
answered:
'Yis, bress de Lord, an dere’s one ting
w’at I like 'bontdat boy better’n any odder,
Wid all his prosperities and opportunities,
be jist al'ays staid a black feller like he
was bornedl”—Youth’s Companion.
New York, Jnly 8.—Cicero Harri
son, 18, a cousin of ex-President Harri
son, has mysteriously disappeared. He
was last seen on the Old Dominion line
steamship Guyandotte. He was a pas
senger on the vessel bound for this city
from Norfolk. Mr. Harrison had in
his possession when he hoarded the
ah ip $100,000 in money and securities.
On the arrival of the vessel at her
dock Friday night no trace of either
Mr Harrison or his money could be
found.
Mrs. Mary Oliver, a daughter of Mr.
Harrison, who was his traveling com
panion, does not say that A ere has been
foul play, but she believen the disap
pearance to be most mysteripus, as her
father had not an enemy in the world
and was of sound mind and health
whon ho took passage at Norfolk op
Thursday night.
She claims that the officers of the
Guyandotte have not given her proper
assistance in clearing up the disappear
ance of her father.
Alexander Brown, a messenger to
Purser Carr, of the steamship, claims
to have seen Mr. Harrison ou the upper
deck of the vessel at 9 o'clock on Friday
morning. She asked to see him, but
according to the story she told he was
pot sent to her. -
The officials of the vessel claim that
her father, when he boarded the vessel,
did not carry the valise containing liis
securities, vriiile Mrs. Oliver, on the
Othpr hand, is certain that he made
eoine arrangement for it, as she spoke
to him on the subject after he came on
board, and he snowed her a cheek
for it.
Mr, Harrison was formerly a carriage
manufacturer at East Saginaw, Mich.,
with branch houses at Jackson and Bay
City. Two years ago he sold out and
devoted liis time to traveling,
When Mrs, Oliver went out to break
fast, her father did not appear. She
waited sometime and then went to his
room. Getting no response to her re
peated calls she sent in a steward, but
Mr. Harrison could not be found,
She became alarmed aud confided
her fears to Captain Walker, who or
dered the vessel searched, but no trace
of the missing man could be found.
Mrs. Oliver then examined the state
room to find her father’s money and pa
pers, but they were .gone.
Jackson, Tenn., July 3.— Considera
ble excitement exists here as well as in
every other town and city throughout
Tennessee, over the objectionable insur
ance laws passed by the last legisla
ture.
Nearly every insurance company do
ing business in the state will at once
suspend operations until at such time
as the objectionable laws are repealed.
From the pressure brought to bear it
Is believed that Governor Turney will
call the legislature in extraordinary
session at once. There seems to be no
other way out of the difficulty.
The legislature is being denounced as
being the sorriest law making body
that ever assembled in this state. By
their mistakes they have not only im
peded business in this state, but the tax
payers must foot the bill for the extra
session,
This city will take action at once
and urge the governor to call an extra
session.

found him not seriously ill, but in order to
frighten him into prudence intimated that
he should be sorry to see him develop cere-

bearing on Pat’s case, and the doctor Bmiled
to himself ns be used them, but they struck
terror to the poor fellow’s heart.

The New* From Norfolk,
Norfolk, Va., July 8.—Cicero Har-
rison, of Jackson, Mich., arrived here
last Thursday morning from Boston, ou
the steamship Essex, and left the same
night on the Guyandotte for Now
York. None of them who saw him re
members having seen a valise in his
possession, aud it is strongly doubted by
the police of this city that he had any
■uch sum of money as has beeu named.
When he arrived here he had with
him a woman who registered at the
Hotel Gladstone as “Mrs. 0. Harrison,”
and was assigned to a room. The man
himself did not register at any hotel in
the city, and it is not known where he
obtained bis meals. When the so-called
Mrs. Harrison registered, she informed
Clerk Moore, of the hotel, that her bus
band would be along in a short while,
About 4 p. in., an old man, answering
Harrison's description, called at the ho
tel and asked to see Mrs. C. Harrison.
He was shown to the parlor, where the
woman was seated, aud they remained
together for an hour, when they left to
take the steamer for New York.
It is known that the woman had
trunk when she arrived here, which
was transferred to the Old Dominion
wharf by Lil baton's express. The dri
yer is positive that she had no other
baggage. The case has assumed a inys
terious aspeot. iuasmuch as the woman
here represented herself to be the wife
of the missing man, and in New York
claimed to be his daughter, Mrs. Mary
Oliver.
