ABSOLUTELY PURE
THE YORKSHIRE HORROR.
Slfkl, Oat ml Om Hundred and Forty*
Fire, Wore Saved.
London, July 7.—Of the 146 person*
imprisoned by the explosion In Ingram’s
colliery, Thornhill, Yorkshire, eight
men and a hoy have been rescued. All
hope for the others in the pit has been
abandoned.
Bodies are being brought to the sur
face rapidly. Eighty-eight have been
recovered already. The scenes at the
mouth of the pit. ns they are brought np
and recognized by relatives and friends,
are distressing.
Two men were brought up uncon
scious bnt breathing. Physicians at
once took them in charge, and they will
proha b I y recover.
Six men, imprisoned behind a hqge
mass of debris but unharmed, were dug
ont. When they appeared at the month
of the pit they were greeted in a most
tonching manner by relatives and
friends.
No reason has been given for the ex:
plosion, bnt the conjecture is that it
was cansed by the carelessness of a
miner in opening his lamp.

(From tbs Minneapolis Journal.)
“Precious Is the panacea that cures
when hope is gone and medical advice
pronounces the death sentence—in
curable.’ How terrible it Is to think of
leaving this aweettffe before the allotted
yean of man’s time here on earth are
spent.” Thus spoke J. B. White of 1201,
3d St., N E, last night to a Journal re
porter. Mr. White has been much talk
ed about of late, and the following con
versation explains why:
“I am a native of Shediac, New Bruns
wick, and of French descent. I have
been in Minneapolis for many years. I
am now 60 years old. Ifell from a build
ing two years ago and broke my thigh,
besides injuring myself internally. The
' doctors could do nothing for me bnt let
the bones grow together as beat they
conld. When I mss able to walk on
crutches I earns near dying from the
complication of troubles that had set in
afterthefalL For one year and a half
I walked on orntohee, striving in vain
to find some relief from the misery I felt
night and day. The worst part of my af
flictions was that 1 could not eat anyth
ing. If I oould have taken nourishment
and kept it down I conld have stood the
isin better. I had four doctor;, and
;ept taking all aorta of medicines I bad
to atop all of them or I would have been
a dead man. I have enough bottles left
to start a drug store. I would be trou
bled so with headaobes. and my hips
wonld pain me so that I often thought
I should go crazy. I was so emaciated
that thero was nothing to me bat akin
and bone. List rammer I felt as if I waa
nearly dead. My kidneys then began to
bother me. I got so I coaid not sleep
only at intervals. Finally I gave np in
de’ pair. One day I mas sitting ont on
theporob It was a beautiful sunny day
The singing of birds and the odor of
flowers set me to thinking of my child
hood days. From that my thoughts re
v. rfed to the little French weekly pa
per, L<* Moniteur Acadien, that we got,
and 1 thought I would like to read it
and see how things mere at my old
home. I told my wife to give me the
last number. She brought me the one
that came that morning. The first thing
I saw was a long article about the mira
culous core of a cripple. I read on and
on, becoming more interested than ever
The patient described in the article said
that Dr Williams* Pink Pills for Pale
People cared him and they wcnld cure
others. The story aroused my interest
and I induced my dinggist to send for
them. I did not expect relief right
awav,but80on they made the headache
pass away-After taking them some days

Washington, July 7.—The secretary
of the treasury has instructed the cus

investigate the whole subject of refunds
pf excessive duties, as conducted at that'
port, and to suggest any improvements
Which seem to them .desirable fn the
prevailing methods,
The Investigation will incidentally
touch the celebrated hat trimmings
cases now pending for settlement under
recent decisions of the supreme court,
and will probably embrace refunds that
have been made within the past few
years as well as cases still unsettled.
One of the points to be determined by
the commission relates to the genuine
ness of the samples upon which action
has been taken for purposes of reliqui
