FIFTY THIRD CONGRESS.
The work of organizing the Fifty-
third Congress in the extra session
will not occupy much time, says the
C tlumbus Enquirer Sun. The most
important matter is the assignment
of committees, which Speaker Crisp
thinks will be completed during the
first week. As he will have no op
position he is free to devote his at
tention now to the appointment of
the committees. It is likely some
changes will be made in the matter
f chairmanships.
THE u. S. SUPREME COURT.
The death of Associate Justice
Samuel Blatchtord will make room
for the appointment by President
Cleveland of another Democratic
Bulge, after which the politics of the
country will be more evenly balanc
ed than for a long time before. Chief
Justice Fuller, and Justices Field
and Jackson are at present the only
Democrats on the bench while Jus
tices Harlan, Gray, Brewer, Brown
and Shiras are Republicans. With a
Democrat in the place of Justice
Blatchford there will be four Demo
crats and five Republicans on the Su
premo Bench.
Justice Blatchford was appointed
by President Arthur, and was re
garded as one of the ablest lawyers
on the bench. He has been an ac
tive follower of his profession for
halt a century, and two years ago
reached the age at which he was en
titled to retire from the bench with a
pension for the remainder of his life,
but he preferred to remain on the
bench and die in harness.
Before his appointment to the Su
preme bench he acquiied great die„
tinction as a specialist in admiralty
cases, and he was joint author of
Blatchford and Howland’s Admiral,
ty Cases, a work which is held in
high esteem by the bar. He was
quite wealthy, his fortune being es»
timated between three and font mil
lion dollars. He had a somewhat
singular fad—the collecting of cal
endars and almanacs, and is eaid to
have bad one of the most complete
collections in the country.
According tu a correspondent cf
The New York Times it is being sug*
gested that President Cleveland may
appoint Senator Gray of Delaware,
and thus give Delaware a chance to
return Mr. Bayard to his old place
in the Senate.—Augusta Chronicle.

■I gladly testify to the following facts: t
have been a very great sufferer for the last fire

Dyspepsia.
I oould scarcely eat anything because of the In

time covered with nil rheara, and my cough
weakened me to that I could scarcely walk. I
bad several attacks of bleeding at the lungs.
If y breath became so short that I was unable to
work and was obliged to give up my business,
which Is that of a mason. I could not even
walk about much. So I kept going from bad to
worse. I then had an attack of the shingles,
which, with all my other complaints, confined

the 8UNDAY QUESTION AT THE FAIR.
The question whether or not the
Chicago fair shall be opened on Sun
days is not yet finally settled. The
national commission of the fair is
not satisfied with the present status
of the matter, and has arranged for
ita farther consideration just as soon
as the written opinion of Chief Jus
tice Foiler cau be obtained.
■ At a meeting of the commission
last Tbursdsy, Mr. Palmer, presi
dent of the fair, urged the adoption
of a resolution closing the gates on
Sundays. He declared that the na
tional commission had put itself in
a false position, and that he was tired
of the '‘petty evasion” that pretends
that the opening of the gates is in
accordance with the law.
It seems that there has been no
decision of the courts on the rule or*
dering the gates closed on Sundays.
The decision of the Chief Justice
binged on the question of the juris
diction of the national commission,
and it is now a matter of doubt
whether anything in that decision
sets aside tbe Sunday closing rule
of that commission.
It ia pretty safe to say, however,
tb at tbe Sunday opening question is
practically settled. The local com
mission has taken the matter into

Augusta News: Chancellor Boggs is
down bn the social features at tbe Uni
versity, and has shut down on them in
future. There certainly has been too
much of this sort of thiDg going on,
andrjnow the college curriculum and
healthy athletics will have a fairer
chance. This new order need not shut
out the Greek letter fraternities, how.
ever, for the popular idea that they are
exclusively social is all a mistake. They
can themselves have a batter chance to
develop on the right line, with the
social side features omitted.
From the Sylvania Telephone: Sum
mer Racken, the negro who murdered
Captain F. M. Francis in Burke county
on April 27 last, was hanged for the
crime at Waynesboro on Friday, June
10. Only about two months elapsed
from the time of the crime waa com
mitted until the murderer expiated it
upoD the gallows.
If justice were always meted out as
swiftly and surely as in this instance,
there would not be so many lynchiDgs
in the land. Thu people would be
willing to trust to the courts if they
knew that in a few months, (t tbe
farthest, retribution would oome. The
swift trial and punishment of Summer
Raoken will do more to quench tbe
mob spirit in Burke county—if there be
sueha spirit there—than all the edito
rials and governers’ proclamations that
might be written or proclaimed in
Georgia in condemnation of lynobing
Savannah News: After a terrible
cyclone in Iowa the other day it was
found necessary to dispose of tbe bodies
of the viotims in sn expeditious manner
because of the extremely warm weather.
The bodies cf the human victims were
hurried into tbe cemeteries as rapidly
ss possible, while tbe bodies of the ani
mals were burned. Had the survivors
been able to lay aside sentiment form
time, in tbe interest of tbe living, they
would probably have done well to have
consigned the human bodies to the
flames also.
At Pomeroy the supply of cefflos
gave out and many bodies were nec
essarily kept above ground, where they
exhaled poisonous gaser, and those that
were boned were probably put away
in shallow graves, or the interments
were otherwise faultily made, because
of the excitement and the hurry. After
the Johnstown flood there was much
sickness and many deaths traceable to
the unburied dead among the debris.
At Johnstown, however, the state cf
affairs could not be helped, for various
reasons. If virulent fevers should
breakout among the surviving residents
of the worst stricken < f the lows towns
the cause might, and probably would,
he traoed to the cemeteries containing
the bodies t f tbe cyclone victims.

OCTOBER 16tg 1892.
There ia more Catarrh in this section
of the countrA than all ether diseases
put together, and until the last few
veers was supposed to be incurable.
For a great many yeew doctors pro-} goo
nounced ita local disease, and prp-
scribed local remedies, and by constant
ly failing to cure with local treatment,
pronounced it incurable. Science has
provi n catarrh to be a constitutional
disease,and therefore requires constitu
tional teeatment. Hall’s Catarrh Cure,
manufactured by F. J. Cheney & Co-
Toledo, Ohio- is the only constitutional
care on the market. It is taken inter
nally in doses from 10 drops to a tea-
spoonful. It aots directly on tbe blocd
and muoous surfaces of the system.
They offer ane hundred dollars for any
case it fails to oure. Send for circu
lars and testimonials. Address.
