A LESSON FROM A LYNCHING
The Macon Telegraph says that it
looks very much as though- the de
termined Kentuckians who lynched
C J. Miller, the mulatto who was
supposed to be the murderer of the
Ray sisters at Bardwell, Ky., >ast
week, have made a terrible mistake,
and the fact that such a mistake has
been made should influence other
communities where the necessity for
lynchiag may hereafter arise.
The crime for which Miller was
lynched was one of the most horrible
which has been chronicled for years.
Two young girls had been outraged
and then murdered in the most bruo
tal manner imaginable, and if ever
lynching was justifl-ble it seems to
have been so in the case of the citi«
zens of the little town where thus
young girls had lived.
Now, however, it appears that the
victim of the lynchers was an inno
cent man, against whom there was
little, if any, evidence* Circum
stances were against him, bat the
day after the lynching it was dis
covered that there was proof of the
correctness of the story told by the
lictim himself. But that was too
late to repair the damage done
Such instances .may occur again.
A little time spent in investigation
will not be time lost, and it is many,
many times better that the guilty
escape than that the blood of an in
nocent hnman being be upon the
hands of the people who act blindly
in the discharge of what they believe
to be their du‘y.

THE IDEA TOO THIN-
All talk about Athens going ton
wards bankruptcy on account of the
water works litigation is absurd on
its very lace. There has been no
firmer advocate of the position that
all this litigation has been caused
by mismanagement than 1 be Ban
nek, and with all due respect to all
the answers made on this subject we
do not believe onr position has been
shaken in the least Yet we are not
disposed to let such statements go
unchallenged when they reflect upon
the financial credit of the city, and
especially when they find their way
to points where onr inteiests are
deeply involved.
Of course Athens is all right along
this line, and there is no daiger of
her being otherwise. Yon might pile
up a hundred thousand dollars more
of debt upon her and yet, not reach
the line allowed by the State Con
stitution. There is not a more sol
vent municipal corporation in the
Union than Athens, Ga* and her
bonds sell at par and are considered
good bargains at that.
So much for the reports that have
been circulated on this subject. On
the other hand, it matters little as
regards the solvency of a city gov
ernment or corporation when it comes
to a question of expenses. Just be
cause a oity is able to meet such ex
penses is to reason why they should
he incurred needlessly through mis
takes, however honest they may have
been, and it is no answer to the ar
gument to say that Athens has the
lowest tax rate of any city in Geor
gia. If it can he made lower there
« is every reason why each shonld be
done.
We repeat that Athens is in good
condition financially both as to pub
lib debt and perfect solvency and
ability to meet any and all demands
.on her. and that her bonds and obli
gations rank as high as those of any
. city. What the people are after is
the stopping of all expenses that
can be’ done away with and the prac*
lice of the strictest economy.
Macon News: For a city of ten or
fifteen thousand inhabitants $93 000 per
annum for the expenses of the city gov
ernment ia enormona. Athens must be
fine missionary ground for a movement
looking toward retrenchment and re
form.
The Columbus Krquirer-Sun says:
The charges made by the Athens Banner
as to tbe mismanagement and in com
petency in the administration of the
State Uaiversity, distinctly involving
the ohanoellor, should be made the sub
ject of an early and thorough investi
gation. A reputable journal like the
Banner, published in the University
town, would not give prominence to
these charges snd endorse them unless
there was a basis for them. Any delay
in this investigation will be calculated
to injure tbe univ.rjty.
The Atlanta Constitution, not to be
left ou news, especially in hot weather
and doll times, always manages to toe
tbe mark in some way even if it has to
pinoh the facts a little. It says:
Judge N. L Hutchins, of the Ath
ens district, is at the Markham for a
day or two. He came from Lawrenoe-
vllle yesterday, bat has been in Athena
most of tbe time lately bearing the case
of the oity against tbe water works
company of that city, tbe case involv
ing several very nice points of law.”
Tbe judge hasn’t been in Athens in
some time, and certainly has not been
hearing any water works osse.

“Let me see your best brooms,” said
little woman excitedly as she plunged into
a grocery store.
‘Green or driod?" asked the grocer, put
ting his pen over his ear and rolling up his
sleeves.
“I said brooms,” snapped tbe woman.
“And I meant brooms," answered the
grocer civilly, ’’but there’s a difference.
Some are new made and green, while others
are dry and seasoned. Some women folks
won’t touch a real dry broom. They allow
the corn seeds come off in the sweeping.”
“I ain’t saying nothing lbout sweeping,”
said the woman. “I want a good, strong
shank that ia put together for all it is
worth and a handle that won’t snap the
first time I use it.”
The grocer trotted oat his brooms, and
the little woman hefted each one with a
practiced hand. Finally she selected one
that was unpainted and homely, bnt as
heavy as a cart wheel.
. “How much is that one?”
“Forty cents, ma’am. It’s the biggest
and best in tbe lot, though it don’t look as
fancy as the rest.”
“Forty cental I’ve used up a hundred
brooms since I married that last husband
of mine, and I ain’t never paid over a quar

“Madam,” said the grocer, standing tbe
broom npinaeomer, “it ain’ta broom that
you want, in my opinion—I. «;• rlnb.”
