ClortosU Pugilist Gives a Son of Ba
nal a Few Leeeons.
Tbe New York World gives the fol
lowing account of how a young minis
ter fresh from the seminary met a son
of Belial:
That we have not quite appreciated
muscularity in student life and have
not made proper allowance for the
biceps in serving God and man the lit
tle town of Jericho hastens to prove to
ns. Over in that Long Island village
righteousness is singing hallelnj aha to
science, and tbe exemplary mothers in
Israel who turn the other cheek alio as
rule of life are giving thanks for a
pastor fresh from college who oan “put
up his dukes.”
It seems that a modest little church
there has been harried for a long time
by a village ruffiin—a regular prayer-
meeting-raviaging jsybawker. It was
the custom of the Jerioho jsyhawker to
land in the middle of the congregation
and after siBging Ta-ra-ra to dance a
double clog on tbe deacons and stride
about with exultant ribaldry and blas
phemy over the fainting bodies of the
sisters..
Thera seems to have been no effectual
means of protection against this lusty
son of Belial. The brethren found that
prayer did not protect, and the venera
ble deacons were fast .becoming black
and blue by turning the other cheek
also.
At this juncture Heaven and the
Drew Theological Seminary sent a
young pastor to take charge. This ex
emplary and youthful shepherd; had a
way of turning his other cheek also
whioh inoluded his other fist. The jay-
hawker arrived in that congregation
while the theological student was in the
middle of a prayer, and he proceeded
with his usual ribaldry and defiance
and bified one old deacon under the
ear.
Then it was that the old dispensation
came suddenly to the front in the new
pastor. He took his coat off and he
came down from that pulpit. There is

BILL NYE
Criticises Athens and Her City Ordl
nances.
In one of bis reoent letters, Bill Nye,
the famous humorist, pays his respects
to Athens as follows:
Athens, Ga., is one of the most ad
vanced cities, morally in the state.—
During tbe past year the city council
psssfied an ordinance “forbidding the
appearance of any female on the Btage
in short skirts or tigbts.”
It seems rather a rigid law, for some
times a very good juvenile entertain
ment might he out short by tnia ordi
nance. Think of little Eva in loeg
dresses or dying with her boots on
Athens ia a moral place, and in fancy
we can tee what a stride has been made
there when tbe lady aorobat has to go
through her ttdicus doable somersaults
and flying leaps in a trail.
Even the female elephant will have to
drape herself or keep off the stage.
“ Canary birds and trained fleas,” cays
tbe News and Courier, “will have to be
careful.” So will trained mice and
dog shows. Possibly Athens means
human females, but even then what of

“Sir, I am, ns you may see, a gentleman.”
Bows exchanged.
I want a complete set of teeth.”
“Nothing more simple.”
“llfg your pardon, not quite so simple. I
have a few stumps left that require pulling
out first. But hitherto 1 have always
shrunk from the operation. I am dread
fully nervous, and the very thought of the
Instruments makes me”
“But, sir, you won’t feel anything.”
“Certainly; I have heard that you employ
anaesthetics. That is why I came here.”
“They are infallible.”
“Infallible, you say?”
"Most assuredly.”
“I have lieen told that before, but can
you prove it?”
“Iax>k here. I will myself inhale the
fumes of the liquid contained in this bottle,
and you will see”
“That they render you Insensible!”
“To everything. You may pinch mo, do
what yon like with me.”
“You don’t say so?”
And then the dentist, put on his mettle,
sat down, took a whiff out of the bottle
and fell asleep. When he awoke, the pa
tient had disappeared and carried olf all
that was worth having out of his drawer
and left no trace behind.—Tit-Bits.
He lVu Indignant.
“Look here, mister,” said the man with a
carpet sack, “I’m willin to do anything
that’s in reason. 1 am willin to mind any
rules ycr hotel sees fit to git up as long a»
they have any common sense back of ’em,
but all I’ve got to say that if yer in earnest
you’ve vi’lated the principles of common
sense, an if it’s n joke it’s a mighty dog
goned poor one.”
“What on earth do you mean?” the hotel
clerk asked as the guest took breath.
“I allude to them signs ye’ve got tacked
up in my room. One of them says, ‘Don’t
blow out the gas,’ and another says, ‘Gas
burned after midnight’ll be charged fur
extra.’ Now, what in thunder is a feller
goin to do?”—Washington Star.
cry, but he landed his left on the eye of
the exultant intruder, who went down
in s heap. With a wild roar he came
up again and got it on the other eye,
caroming on the corner of a pew and
disappearing in a knot under one of the
benches.
Theology oalmly rolled up its sleeves
and requested the sisters to sit still and
see the glory of God. A magnificent
upper cut then caught Belial under the
chin and sent him spinning ten feet to
wards the door, where the pastor ar
rived at the same instant, and with the
help of a stalwart jerk and kick, caused
Satan to execute a “cart-wheel” in the
road and fetch up against the fence.
Theology then put on its coat and
finished the prayer. Later accounts
from Jericho indicate that the fathers
and mothers in Israel have not yet
shown any strong opposition to the
higher criticism of Drew, and there ia
peace along cool Siloam’a shady rill.
A Sure Cure.
"Oh, father," said Mabelle in weak and
languid tones, “I fear that I am going to
be gravely ill. My head feels so light and
queer, and I am faint, so fuint.”
“Heaven!” broke in Mabelle’s papa, his
sympathies deeply stirred. “I’ll get a doc
tor this minute. What can I do for you,
my poor child?”
“I don’t know, I’m sure,” responded
Mabelle as she almost swooned against
his ample breast, “but we might try one
of Mme. Swellstyle’s new summer hats to
begin with."—Chicago Record.

am afraid that angel cake I made for you
is ruined.
Twickenham—Umph! I don’t believe any
firecracker would hurt your angel cake.
Mrs. Twickenham—Well, it did. There’s
a big dent in it.—Truth.
A Lively Time.
“You have a lively set of clerks,” he said
to the proprietor of the establishment. "It
must be pleasant and profitable to have
employees so full of energy and enthusi

“Yes,” responded the proprietor, “we
