DON’T GET BEHIND. BROTHBR.
The Atlanta Constitution says:
Mr. T. W. Reed, of Athens, editor
of The Athens Banner, is keeping
things lively in bis controversy
with the editor of the Gainesville
Eagle. Citizens of Athens in town
yesterday said it begins to look like
war to the finish with the two edi
tors. The only hope expressed by
one of them ii that the hot weather
will stave off anything like fighting
until the editors get their little ang
ularities smoothed down. "If this
thing keeps up,” said he. “there will
be sun spots on the moon next time
the shines.”
The Constitution reporter should
keep up with the procession or citi
zens of Athens shouldn’t tell snch
things to the reporter. Weeks ago
the controversy between the Eagle
and the Banner ended and since
then Editor Craig has been shooting
at the church members ofDablonega
about not giving decent bnrial to a
woman o( that town, and we have
been doing our best to handle in
the most approved style certain
questions relating to the welfare of
Athens.
{in rendering them royal entertain-
meant while they stay here. The
convention will be in session three
day*.
Now it toby just such conventions
that a city to built op to a remarka
ble degree, and A*.hena should seek
to become the place where all the
great conventions of Georgia in the
fnitue shall be held. It affords the
people great pleasure to start
with to entertain the genial
and cultured gentlemen and
ladies who attend. Then it attracts
to a city many people who go away
with pleasant reoollsctlons and
come again and make it their home
It quickens trade In every way and
makes the wheels of industry to
tarn with a busier hum than ever.
Such is the making of a city and
Athens it prond to have Horticul
tural Convention meet here next
month.
organise the Central. It will pay them [
lo pot a value on their 42,000 shares,
and it will help a lot of helpless and
broken people do wn here to brace up
tiie stock and the junior securities.
Macon Evening News: Col. W. T.
Atkinson is said to have given upall
hope of tbe Berlin consulate. Hypo
thetical candidate# for the Speaker’s
shoe# might as well fade away.
Savannah News: Tbe Warren ton
Clipper is early in the field with a can
didate for governor. It thinks Gen. C.
A- Evans is pre-eminently the man for I
the place. With so many excellent
gentlemen from among whom to make
section, tbe state convention may
find itself under tbe necessity of pat
ting all the names in s hat and getting I Lt. Ath*n»..
blind-blinded boy to draw out one.

THE REASON FOR IT.
When the Banner says that a re
duction both in officers salaries and
other departments of the city govern
ment will be necessary next
year, it has a reason for it It would
be a poor reason to reduce them just
in order to be reducing, and if the
cilicers are worth present figures and
the city is able to pay for them, it
would not be light to cut them.
We do not believe in high salaries,
neitheir do we believe in low salat
ries. We are not alone in our opin
ion that some of the salaries of Ath
one officials are too high. If the
people believe this and want them
reduced, they should be reduced.
Bat granting for the sake of the
argument that the salaries of city
officials are not too high as they
now at\nd, even then thereto a rea
son for reduction.
The e xpenaes of the water-works
litigation in New York will amount to
not less than fonr thonsand dollars,
puttir g Mr.Nottman’s fee at twenty,
five hundred dollars. This sum will
have to be raised next year, and there
are three ways in which to raise it,
viz., by issuing bonds, by taking it
oat of the general expense fund, or
by specific taxation. That tbe peo
ple would repudiate the idea of issu
ing bonds no one can deny, Now
the general expense fond has reached
its limit of fifty one-hundredths of
one per cent tax levy as provided by
law, and unless it is reduced the
money could not come from that
source. Then the general expenses
cf the city will have to be reduced or
this money raised by specific taxa
tion.
We say reduce the expenses, for
there is every reason for it.
Editorial Comment.
Tax majority of the two hundred
bar-room«in Charleston, S. C., are run
ning in full tilt against tbe dispensary
law, and they are waiting with expect
ant awe tbe punishment pronounced by
Governor Tillman.
J. Simpson, tbe sockless statesman
of Medicine Lodge, Kansas, is leading
the forlorn crusade against Speaker
Crisp.
Editor Walsh, cf the Chronicle, is
back at bis post again. He did good
work for Augusta while be was at
Rockbridge Alum Springs, and is much
improved in health and ready to do
; better servioe than ever for the welfare
of tbe FountaiiCiit .
In times of financial depression
merchant doesn’t stand back on reduc
ing his clerks sa aries because tbe sala
ries be to paying are about wbat the
labor is worth. He just scales the sal
ary to a point where it suits tbe times.
The Macon Telr graph bolds that
Judge Speer’s contention in the Cen
tr&l railroad case that a foreign corpo
ration could have no powers in this
state whioh are denied to a Georgia
corporation may not be law, but it
good, bard common sense, founded *on
right and justice and believe the Su
preme Court of tbe United States will
bold that it is law.
Rev. S. K. England in his discussion
with Rsv. H. S. Abbott, which has been
reported in our columns, asked him
three times a direct question and three
times received a distinct answer. Mr.
J. H. Huggins, Jr., was standing by,
and appears in today’s issue in a col
umn article as to what passed between
tbe two ministers. We submit the
qneetion as to who would be in tbe bet
ter position to bear and remember wbat
passed, a man who asked a direct ques
tion tbree times and received a distinct
reply tbree times, or a man who was a
by-stander. Isn’t it more than likely
that Mr. Huggins didn’t hear and
doesn’t know it all!
Pension Commissioner Loobren is to
be congratulated on having determined
to re-examine all oases where pensions
are drawn on tbe gronnd of disability.
A Washington musician who bad been
