ABSOLUTELY PURE
BARELY ESCAPED A MOB.
A Murderer Who Mur Y. t Be Lynched
for life Crime.
Cando, N. D., July 12.—Albert Barn
burner, the young murderer who killed
3;,.u Krei ler, his wife and four children
on Friday, narrowly escaped lynching
here. Ho had been caught at Delor-
aine, Manitoba, a few miles from the
border, and agreed to come back with
Sheriff McCuno, of Ramsey county,
without extradition papers.
W hen the sheriff and his prisoner ar
rived, a mob of determined men were
waiting for him with the fixed plan of
hanging the murdeter to the nearest
telegraph-pole, but Sheriff McCone suc
ceeded in eluding the mob. It is 8
question, however, whether Bambur
ger is any safer in Ramsey county than
he would have noen here, as there is the
wildest indignation over his bloody
crime.
C1TT TAXES.
The council has decided it impracti
cable to postpone the collection of tbe
city taxes. If the first installment is
not paid by July 1st., the law requires
me to issue executions for the whole
amount of the tax for the year.
Please pay promptly, as it will be
impossible to coilect it all on the last
day. A. L. Mitchell,
Clerk of Counoil.

Valparaiso, July 12.—During the
sitting of the chamber of deputies En
rique Montt asked Foreign Minister
Blanco for an explanation of the letter
written by ex-Foreign Minister Errazu-
riz to ex-Cnited States Minister Egan
in which complimentary statements are
made concerning Mr. Egan. Senor
Blanco said the translation furnished
by Mr. Eagan to the newspapers con
tained many inaccurate statements, aud
that part of the letter of Senor Errazu-
riz had been omitted.
Ricardo Trumbull in a long letter to
the public denounces ex-Miuister Erra-
zv.riz for giviug Egan a letter which
did not represent the sentiment of the
Chiliuns. He says Senor Errazuriz
knew Mr. Egan hoped to be appointed
member of the board of arbitration on
the Chilian claims, and asks the ex-
minister of foreign affairs how he can
reconcile his letter to Egan with his
publicly expressed views last May. At
that time Senor Errazuriz published a
letter in La Patria in which he referred
to Mr. Egan as a ‘-robber of Irish
funds," and declared that he was not a
fit representative of the United States.
SELF PRAISE.
Self praise is no recommendation,but
there are times when one must permit
a person to tell the truth abont himself.
When what he says is supported by tbe
testimony of others no reasonable man
will doubt his word. Now, to ssy that
Allcock’s Porous Plastkbs are the
only genuine and reliable porous plas-

slightest degree. They have stood tbe
test for over thirty years, and In proof
of their merits it is only neceasaiyto

fleeted and to the voluntary testimo
nials of those who have used them.

DEMANDS FOR BANK NOTES.
From Fast ami Weal, Order* Arc Re
ceived at Washington for Currency.
Washington, July 12.—Four million
dollars’ worth of national bank notes
were issued to the national banks last
mouth, and the prospects are that the
demand for circulation will this mouth
reach at least $(500,000.
The demand comes chiefly from the
east and west and very little from the
south, whero the feeling seems to be
settled that the state banking system
will soon be resuscitated and pay better
interest than the national bank system.
The sudden and uncommon increase
in the demand for circulation is attrib
uted at the treasury to the fact that
overnmenc bonds can now be got at a
gure which will enable some profit to
be made from the circulation privilege.
The treasury is responding very cordi
ally to the demands of the banks. It
has made arrangements at the bureau
of engraving and printing so that the
time required for making and printing
the notes is reduced almost one-half to
what it has usuully been.

When you leave Brooklyn for the sum
mer, you should go to acme quiet place
where you can have a good long rest,” said
George Holdiugton to his fiancee.
“Oh, I don’t want to rest; I want to have
some fun,” pouted Esther.
“Haven’t you hail fun enough this win
ter? I’m sure you must be nearly worn
out. Haven’t we belonged to the Classon
Avenue German and the Hanson Place
Bowling club? And we’ve gone to the the
ater once a week, and then we’ve had our
choir rehearsal, and every Wednesday
night you had your sewing class at the
Young Women’s Christian association, be
sides all the progressive euchre parties and
authors’ readings and lectures we’ve been
to. I should think that was enough for
any girl.”
“Pooh!” observed Esther. “Those things
were well enough while they lasted, but
I’m going iq, for a really good time now. I
want to go to some awfully swell place, like
Bar Harbor or Asbury Park.”
“I’m afraid you are a little inclined to be
iddy,” said George gravely. “I hope you
on’t intend to indulge in any of the silly
watering place flirtations that so tend to
lower a woman in the eyes of her friends?”
“Now, whatever you do, don’t get jeal
ous!” cried Esther decidedly. “You know
I hate a jealous mau, George. Of course I
expect to meet other men this summer, but
I hope I know how to treat them properly.”
'I have no objection to your meeting
other men if you think you can be true to
me,” said George.
“Don’t he a goose! I never meet a man
and get to know him real well but what it
seems to me that he is you—that is, if he
Is very nice.”
Yon think ho is I?” asked George, some
what puzzled.
“Yes, especially if he hits bright blue
eyes and a cute little brown mustache and
curly lmir and talks very interestingly.
Then it almost seems as if you were with
me, you know.”
“Y-e-s,” assented George.
“And if I should meet some fellow like
that and I should go riding and driving
with him and rowing it would he all
right, wouldn’t it, so long as I felt as if it
were you all the time?”
“Perhaps so,” replied George.
“And if I should get to know him better
and lie should want to hold my hand or
put his arm around my waist or—or even
kiss me, just once or twice, you know, it
would lie all right, wouldn’t it, for then I
am sure I should think jje was you, es
pecially if it was on the piazza after dark.”
‘It might be all right for you, Esther,”
said George, with a conscientious struggle
for exact truth. “It might be all right for
you, but 1 don’t see that it would do me
much good!”—Harry Romuine iu Life.

“You surprise me!”
“Yes, indeed. Why, only this very morn
ing we had a dispute, but I stood firm and
told him he might move the pyramids, but
he couldn’t budge me when my mind was
made up.”
“And he admitted he was wrong?”
“Well, about the same thing. He said,
‘Have your own way, Maria.’ ’’

Bat They Watted In Tain For the Guests
to Come.
They had only been married a month and
it was their first dinner party, consequent
ly they were both a little flurried when the
time came for the guests to arrive.
She had superintended the arranging of
the table herself, and now stood surveying
its obviously new silver, glass and linen
with housewifely pride.
“Do you really think everything will go
well, Edward?” she asked for thetwentieth
time. —
And for the twentieth time he answered:
“Of course it will all go well. I only pity
the poor fellows who have no little wife
aud no home of their own.”
“Oh, Edward, how nice!” she. gurgled,
“and how I do pity the poor girls who
have no nice, kind husbands. There is
Edith. She is such a sweet girl, she really
ought to know how nice it is to be mar
ried.” •
“Yes, indeed. And then there is George.
He has no idea of what happiness he is
missing.”
She walked into the parlor, and stand
ing before the mirror rearranged the rose
in her hair. “Do you like it so?” she asked.
“It is lovely. Poor George, how he mast
envy me?”,
“And, oh, Edward, I do feel sorry for
Edith. Hark, is that a carriage?”
They both fell into easy attitudes of ex
pectancy, but the carriage rolled on. He
took out his watch and looked at iL It
was just 7.
“Oh, dear,” she moaned, “I’m afraid they
will not be prompt, and my notes said 7
sharp.”
“Perhaps my watch is fast,” he said
soothingly.
She moved her lace pin a little, then re
placed it, regarding herself in the glass
with a critical air. He walked up and
down with his hands in his pockets.
“Oh, dear,” she wailed, “they are late al
ready, and the cook will be so cross. She
looks perfectly colossal when she is cross,
Edward.”
“And the women will have to chatter
half an hour in the dressing room after
they do come,” he groaned.
“Why, Edward, how unkind—as if the
men did not like to stay just as long with
their horrid cigars!”
“Listen, here they come!”
They fell again into position, but the
Ivheels passed on.
“It is mid,” she said, “people never kept
mamma waiting in this way. They were
always anxious to come to her house.”
“Perhaps they have gone there now.”
“Why, Edward! But I do wish they
would come. I'm afraid the dinner Is ru-
ined._ I don't dare to go to see. I wonder
if I might call down the tube?”
“Of course,” was the airy response. “I
say this is an awful bore. I envy George.
Nobody expects him to give dinner par
ties.”
“And I envy Edith. She has no one to
talk unkindly to her.”
The clock chimed the half hour.
“You arc sure you said 7 sharp?”
“Of course I am. I am not quite an im
becile yet if I have married you.”
“Who is talking unkindly now?”
“Oh, I neverthought-that you would treat
me so when you begged me to marry you.”
“I only asked yon once aud you said yes
quick enough.”
“1 never thought you would bo a brute.
“And 1 never thought you would be a
virago. ”
“Nobody will accept my invitations now,
just because I have married you—mamma
said I was making a mistake.”
“People were always glad enough to nc-
cept my invitations before I was married.”
“Very well, if you want to be free I will
go home.”
“If you want to go, pray don’t allow mo
to detain you.”
The clock chimed out eight strokes, car
riages kept rolling by, but none of them
stopped. She swept into the bedroom and
began opening drawers and boxes and tak
ing out their contents, which she could not
see for her tears. He tried to hum “After
the Ball,” watching her movements fur
tively through the open door. Would she
really leave him? And what would the
boys say if she did?
She tumbled the costly things about in a
careless fashion. What did their beauty
matter now when she was going home with
a broken heart to die!
“But why did everybody stay away?” he
muttered between his teeth.
“Haven’t we a friend in the world?” she
asked herself.
Then she gave a cry. Her eye had fallen
on a white heap in the corner of a drawer.
“Edward!” she cried in tragic tones,
“here are all my invitations now—I had
forgotten to mail them!”
They looked at each other a moment—
those two who were alxrnt to part forever.
Then n smile curled the corners of her
mouth. In an instant sliqwos clasped in
his arms. Then a shrill whistle sounded
from the tube, and an offended voice called
“Would yez be bavin any dinner to-
noigbt?”
“Oh, Edward!” she whispered, “how shall
1 ever tell the cook?”—Chicago Tribune.
