INGALLS ON REID.
And Then* Reid on Incalls-— Roth Are
Pretty Harsh.
Chicago, July 13 —Whitelaw Reid,
who with his family has been visiting
the World’s Fair, was seen by a re
porter just as be was starting back to
New York. He was asked if he had
read ex-Senator Ingalls’ criticism of his
candidacy for the vice presidency.
“No,” said Mr. Reid with a laugh,
“but you know I was not In favor of
the nomination myself, so probably the
ex.senator and L would not differ mate
rially on that point.”
Mr. Reid was shown a passage in
which Mr. Ingalls sneered . at him as
“uxorious” and an “aristocrat';” ob
jected to his dress, manner and ways
and spoke of his “supercilious insults”
to laboring men.
"That,” said Mr. Reid with much se-
riousnes, “is absurd. I have been a la
boring man myself, far more than Mr.
Ingalls ever was; and he would proba
bly be puzzled to specify any insult, su
percilious or otherwise,' VhaU have of
fered to labor or aty hipest laboring
man.
“What about the “uxorionsness' and
‘oristocracy.Y’
“Oh, pshaw!" said Mr. Reid. “Who
ever heard before a rational man at
tacking a candidate .because he was de
cently fond-of his wife? The rest of
Mr. Ingall’s complaint seetnr, to be that
in otherparticnlars I act like a gentle
man. Well, out in Kansas they surely
didn't bring that accusation against
him. And yet, when he was at last a
candidate, although he abandoned his
supposed principles and crawled in the
dirt before them, Mrs. Lease and Mr.
Peffer thrust him into the gutter. He
has been lying there ever since, spout
ing mud and bad language.”

CITY TAXES.
The council has decided it impracti
cable to postpone tbe collection of the
city taxes. If tbe first installment is
not paid by July 1st, the law requires
me to issue executions for the whole
amount of the tax for the year.
Please pay promptly, as it will be
impossible to collect it all on the last
day. A. L Mitchell,
Clerk of Council.
His Excuse.
Among the early lawyers of Missouri
were Judge James C and General John
C , brothers, both excellent lawyers and
splendid advocates. General John, when
occasion required, closed his argument to
tbe jury bathed in tears himself, with most
of the jury and audience weeping too.
One day he and Judge James were trying
a case, James prosecuting and John de
fending. James made his speech, a strong
one for hts side of the case, and ended with
telling the jury.
“Gentlemen, my brother John will ad
dress you on the other side of the case, and
I want to caution you, he will cry and try
to make you cry. He does it in all his
cases.”
General John then spoke to tbe Jury,
making one of the very best of his pathetic
appeals, causing jury and audience to for
get James’ admonition, and as tears were
flowing John, with great drops rolling
down his cheeks, said to tbe jury:
“My brother Jim told you 1 would cry.
I am crying, and, gentleman of the Jury, if
you had such a d d mean brother as
Jim, you would cry too.”
John’s client was acquitted.—Green Bag.
