At a pretty late hour on Thursday
igbt, as Mr. S. K. Taylor, the night
guard at the Georgia railroad depot
was on his rouude, some unknown per
son was discovered on the track, and
walking on towards the engine house
above the depot. ' The guard halted the
intruder and warned him that no one
was allowed on the depot pr* raises at
that honr of the night. The intruder
in an insolent manner said “that no
one d—d guard could prevent him from
going where he pleased.” Mr. Taylor
then fired, and the man yelled like he
was badly hurt. He went on up tho
road at a rapid pace and was soon out
of sight. Mr Taylor could not distin
guish whether tbe intruder was white
or black. He thinks the man was
wounded, from tbe ones be made, but
could find no trace of him yesterday

A Fight.-Yesterday morning when
the G., C. & N. train stopped a number
of passengers alighted, and then a con
tention atose between two negroes, Ben
Coleman, & porter of the Commercial
hotel, and Stm Echols, a hack driver
for J. S. Bernstein. Coleman beat
Echols very severely with a rock.
Echols’s wounds were so 6erioua that
he was taken at once to the office of Dr,
Benedict that he might receive medical
attention. Policeman Moon arrested
Coleman and put him in the calaboose.
Bystanders said that both men were to
blame.
Judge S. M. Herrington.—Judge
HerriDgton, of Athens, the well known
Ordinary of Clarke county, left yester
day afternoon for his home in the
Classic City, after spendirg several
days here attending the convention of
the Georgia O: dinaries.. He says they
will have a got d lime of it, indeed, next
time they hold a convention, which wi:l
be next year in Atlanta. He says it is
their purpose next tim* to have a grand
banquet and then go off on an excursion
to the sea shore. Theie is not a more
effloient Ordinary in Georgia than is
Judge Herrington, of Clarke. He was
one of the first to t gitate the movement
to have a convention this year.—Con-
stitution.
Our Fire Department —Athens has
swell-equipped fire department com
posed cf good and true men, and the
city is always ready to do everything
possible to increase their efficiency and
add to tbe comfort of tbe men. After
the completion of Mr. Fleming’s store
there waa a small atrip of ground at the
end of tbe fireman’s hall. Tbe city au
thoritiee have put an addition to the
hall taking in this space, thus giving
four additional rooms to the firemen
These rooms will be need aa sleeping
apartments f ir the men, and also for
storing any articles that may be of use
to the department. This is a great
improvement and is appreciated by tbe
firemen.
