WITHOUT A GOVERNOR.
The press ot Illinois in particular
continue to pour hot shot into
Altgeld, the man who by virtue ot
his position has to be called ggr-»
croor. They are making It unusually
hot for him, and iu fact if he ever
gets to the lower regions he will be
aomewhst prepared for the due that
he will then receive. And yet what
cares he for all the criticism that is
being piled upon him? He has ac
complished his object and doesn’t
care eh at the press says about him
2 he anarchists are free; what edito
rial in the press can ever put around
their limbs the shackles of their
just and merited punishment? Illh
nois finds herself practically with
cut a governor, for her chief execu
tive is in league with anarchy and
despised by all honest, courageous,
law-abiding citizens.
It is just such actions as these
that make lynch law possible. It
would not surprice us at any moment
to t<ee Illinois turned into s regular
lynching ground, where the Chicago
Inter-Ocean might with ease take
many object lessons on its favorite
hobby.
The outlook is not bright for
Illinois, for what criminal will be
deterred from the practice of crime
when he knows that back of all courts
of justice, hack of the hangman’
noose there sits the man who release
and pardoned the Haymarket
anarchists? *&hd oh the other hand
whai, law-abiding citizen but who has
less respect for the law that cab be
so trample! under fco.? How many,
citizens indeed, who will be found to
trust only the hempen halier rather
than run the risk of guilty felons
being pardoned by their anarchist
sympathizer, who occupies their
governor’s chair? Illinois should
- -congratulate herself cn the fact that
his term of office not long, and when
it is over, the Democracy ofillinois,
which he has disgraced by his ac
tions, will see to it that he is buried
so deep that the hand of the resur
rection angel will never find him.

Senator Tell kb, of Colorado, the
recognized leader of the free silver
men, says that Colorado does not en
dorse the rabid frothinge of Governor
Waite and others who spoke before the
recent convention. He eays the Sher
man law is not responsible fer the de
pression and that it is simply one of
those periodical crises which cannot be
avoided thet ails this country.
Mb. Clzveland is being urged to ep-
point a Southern man to the Supreme
bench to fill the vacancy caused by the
death of Justioe Blatchford. The name
of Msjor Joseph B. Camming, of Au
guste, has been laid before the presi
dent. The South deserves another
position on the Supreme bench and
if Georgia is to be honored, Maj. Cam
ming would fill the position with great
credit and ability. Bumor has it that
Attorney-General Ulney miy be ap
pointed as Justice Blatchford’a suc
cessor.
