thing in this line in the immediate near
future, and this may cause some one to
believe Athena to be lacking in that
peculiar vim and energy which baa
placed Atlanta foremost in the march
of the progressive south. Bnf, to my
m(nd, it is the manifestation of B wise
policy on the part of our capitalists that
they are timid just at this time of finan
cial depression.
The present financial stringency has

ran, a soldier at Fort Meyer, was drown
ed while bathing in Little river, an arm
of the Potomao, in front of -the fort.
Howard M. Quander, a white boy, 16
years of age, was drowned in Rock
creek, near the National Zoo. Joshua
Holmes, a negro 13 ysaYs old, drowned
while swimming In the Potomac rivor.

Mackinac Island, Mich., July 18.—
Lillian Saulte, an 18-year-old girl em
ployed as chambermaid on the island,
committed suicide by taking laudanum.
She left two letters implicating one of
the soldiers at Fort Brady, who, it is
said, outraged her Friday night last
while coming from a village. She
could not stand the disgrace and had
for days been pleading to have the sol
dier put in prison. The letters are of a
heart-rending kind, telling of her strug
gles as an orphati and her battle for her
honor. Her only relatives reside at Pa-
trolia, Ont.
