Unless the Southern railroads
change their policy and become more
literal they will find, perhaps too
late, that they have been the worst
enemies of the World’s Fair. That
the exposition is a success from an

they have shown themselves to be

out the marked difference between
the rates on round trips granted by
the railroads from the East to
Ohicago and those that are offered to
the people of Georgia. Unless the

to come down very considerably
thousands of people in this State
will be prevented from seeing the

WADE EXPLAINS IT-
The New York Son has been pok
ing much fun at Secretary Smith.
Indeed, it was the very organ that
started out upon the task of unearth'
ing curious Georgia names, and
brought into fame the Hon. Dink
Butts, of Georgia. The people have
for a long time longed to know the
exact reason for such malignant
hatred on the part of Editor Dana,
and at last they have it.
It remained for Athens to famish
the person who ran the editor of tlitf
San into his liar as will appear from
the following card:
To the Editor of The World:
Will you kindly allow me space
in your columns to throw a flash
light on certain constant and malig
nant attacks on the Hon. Hoke Smith,
secretary of the interior, appearing
in the New York San:
Some time ago Mr. Charles
Dana visited Atlanta and Mr. Smith
declined to meet him, giving as his
reasen that any man who would de
scend to the vile scurrulity that Mr
Dana had used m referring to Mis
Cleveland was unworthy the notice
and recognition ot a gentleman.
This explains the Sun’s constant
and silly attacks on Mr. Smith, and
this inloimation may serve to en
lighten those to whom the Sun’s
attitude is queer or dubious.
Inc.ebscll Wade.
1719 G. street, N. W. Washington,
D. C.
As Mr. Wade is in the Interior
department and was one ,of those
Georgians who p opheaied the politi
cal elevation of Secretary Smith, the
above comes in ail probability with
a large degree of official authority.
The death of Colonel Charles C.
Jones, of Augusta, removes from the
stage cf action one of Georgia’s most
distinguished citizens. He had devoted
his entire life to the presentation of tbe
true history of the. people of Georgia,
and ths work he did in that branch will
live after him.

Tom Watson’s campaign in Geoigia
means nothing more than that the
same old campaign of prejudice and
misrepresentation is on again. The
country is passing through a financial
