New York, July 24.—The electric
locomotives for use on steam roads has
finally become an accomplished fact,
and in a few days a 30-ton high speed
motor of this kind will be sent out to
the World’s a^air. It was constructed
in the Lynn shops of the Generul Elec-
j trie company, and will go out to Chica
go jn tow of a regular train. It is built
j to the standard steam railroad gauge,
! and its dimensions are somewhat simi-
I lar to the steam motors now in use on
our elevatjd railroads. It is l(ty feet
: long, 11} feet high, and M feet 4 inches
wide. The motors are supported on
springs resting upon the frt.me of the
machine, and the amatures are monnted
upon hollow shafts through which the
axles of the wheel pass, and to which
they are connected by special couplings.
The cab is of sheet iron, and is built
upon the frame of the locomotive di
rectly over the movirg parts. It is
symmetrical in appearance, and it ts so
:urved as to offer receding surfuces to
The atmospheric pressure. The win-
lows allow of unobstructed view in all
lirections.
The interior of the cab is finishod in
lard wood aud is lighted by a cluster
>f incandescent lamps. Inside this cab
»re the electric air compressors for op-
iratiug the air brakes and the whistle
snd the controlling switch. Above the
frame of the cab at each end are placed
the electric headlights.
The electricity will be taken up by
the motors according to prevailing con
ditions. The trolley may be, under
certain circumstances, the method
adopted, while under others the current
j will be taken from conductors running
' parallel with the surface rails by means
’ of a running wheel or a sliding shoo
contact, as in the case of the intramu
ral railway at the fair or the overhead
railway at Liverpool.
The locomotive is expected to attain
a normal speed of 30 miles an hour. It
is primarily intended for elevated work
. and for light freight traffic and passen
ger service.
1 The adoption of the electric locomo
tive will of course be gradual, but for
places comparatively near eacn other,
and where traffic is dense, it is pecul
iarly adapted. It will probably first bo
.used in elevated railroad service, and in
cities like New York. Brooklyn and
Chicago should be hailed with delight,
j doing away, as it will, with the present
1 evils of noise, coal, smoke, dust, cin
ders and flying sparks that attend the
motors now in use.
j This invention is the first practical
■ step towards tiie adoption of electricity
altogether as a means of securing abso
lute rapid transit. The electric loco
motive is susceptible of a higher 6peed
than that already obtained by our most
magnificent steam locomotives, for
while there is always a limit to steam
production and utilization dependent
upon the structural aud operating con
ditions of the locomotive, the limit o!
speed of a revolving armature is as yet
unknown.
