Washington, July 25.— Conffrfissmen
•who were most interested in defeating
tho passage of the force bill, as report
ed, may aid their western colleagnes in
opposing tho unconditional repeal of
the Sherman silver bijl. This state of
'airs is represented to have been
brought about by correspondence be
tween western silver senators. It is
said that ut the time the force bill was
before the senate the western silver sen
nt-irs bolted their party caucus to ai.l
their southern friends, and resisted to
tho bitter end all efforts to ‘‘whip them
into line;” that it was through their ef
forts, united with those of the solid
Democratic minority led by Senator
Ooruian, that the fight against the force
bill was successful; and that mnch di
plomacy wns necessary to gather suffi
cient strength from tho Republicans to
defeat the force bill, and that obliga
tions wero consequently then incurred
which have since benefited the Repub
lican senators who aided tho Democrats.
Tariff, silver and all other questions
were at tho time relegated to the back
ground, and every energy was put forth
by the southern people to prevent the
passage of the force bill.
It is cited that by a strange coinci
dence the republican senators from tin-
west who helped to defeat the force bib
are now now the most interested ii
continuing the use of silver as money,
and are calling upon the southern sona
tors to help them to prevent action
which they believe will prove to be «
calamity to the business interests of
their states.
A southern senator friendly to silver
said that ho felt like going to the aid of
his fellow-senators from the west on
the principle that, “one good turn de
serves another.” By so doing, he added.
he could repay an obligation that both
ho and his felt wns clue to those who
aided to defeat the “cursed force bill.”
, - - ‘ Mora Money Heine Provided.
Tho money in circulation continues
to increase rapidly. National banks
are taking out additional circulation.
This is the main cause of the increase.
Since the firs, of the present month the
bnrenu of Engraving and Printing has
been ordered to print $•’>,892,000 in na
tional bank notes, which will l»e issued
against bonds deposited by those insti
tutionsto secure their circulation. The
demand which this order represents is
unusually large.
In fact, there have been but very few
times in the last 10 years that so large
an amount of circulation has been
taken out by banks for the same period.
The increased issue of bank notes will,
of course, have a beneficial effect upon
the country generally. It emphasizes,
too, tho improved condition of the gen
eral financial situation which has been
going on for the past two weeks.
' Talk About 4£uiticy v * Successor.
It is stated npon what seems to be
good authority, that ex-Congressman
Andrew, of Massachusetts. will succeed
Qnincy as assistant secretary of state,
It is no longer doubted here that
Quincy is preparing to get out.
Inquiries at the state department bear
out the report of his early retirement.
The South Finuncliklly.
The bank statements received under
the comptroller's last call so far as re
ceived show the national banks of the
south to be in sonnd condition, and Mr.
Eckels highly commends tho stability
and conservative method of their man
agement. He predicts that very few
bank failures will occnr in the south.
