financial pressure better, perhaps, than
other sections of the country, although
the money stringency has depressed
every branch of business throughout
our section. Quo peculiarity of these
troubl job times bss been the tact that
the farmers have stood the storm better
than any orher class of our citizens.
The reason is clear. For two or three
years our farmers have given attention
to provision crops and thus their corn-
cribs end tmoke-houses have been a
home instead of being in the West as
heretofore.

SUSPENDED PENSIONS.
The New York World shows some
of the beauties of the way the Re
publicans managed the peneiona in
the following paragraph:
The examination ot Baum's work
under the Disabilities Pension act cf
1890 reveals such s condition of
allairs that 100,000 pendocs are to
be auspended until the cases can be
reexamined. As was shown iu Jud
ge Long's case, there has been no
pretense of even formal compliance
with the law. Vast soma of public
money haw been squandered on
medicante whose patriotism, what
ever it may once have been, has
degenerated into sheer mercenary
greed.
RESTORATION OF CONFIDENCE
In lees than seven months, nearly
200 national banks have closed their
doors. In xnoet cases they did so in
spite of the fact that they were amply
able to pay their debts, if they had
been able to realize upon their assets.
The showing, so far as the number
of.failures is concerned, is a bad one
That the condition ot the failed
banks, judged by the standards
which are sufficient in ordinary
times, is so good, is evidence that the
business of the country is generally
sound. That this is trne is farther
shown by the comparatively small
number of failures, when all the cir-
cumstance are considered outside the
banking circles. The restoration of
confidence is apparently all that is
necesBsry to ease the present storm
and make the country again prosper
ous. Congress should act promptly
and courageously, with a view to set
tling permanently-the questions ont
of which the present disturbance has
grown.—-Macon Telegraph.
THE SEABOARD AIRLINE-
Despite the Intimations in the
morning dispatches to the contrary,
there is. reason to believe that
ultimately the Georgia Southern and
Florida railroad will form a very in 1
timate connection with the Seaboard
Air Line. The publio is fami i
with the*negotiations that were'had
between these two lines prior to the
collapse of the Macon C instruction
Company. At that time it was freely
admitted that a connection between
them via the Macon and Northern or
otherwise would be a consummation
most desirable:
The recent movements of the
Macon and Northen management by
which a lot is acquired upon which
to eiec'Jworkshopa and the privai’ege
of connecting with the Georgia Sou
thern and Florida is granted indicate
that the original plan ia again com
ing to the surface. It is scarcely
probable that this considerable ex
pense wonld be ^incurred unless
there was something behind it.
It is reported from AtheuB that the
Seaboard Airline is endeavoring to
get control of the B lue Ridge railroad
running from Cornelia to Tallulsh
Fall.-, with a qiew to extending it to
Knoxville, Teun. The possible out
come of the negotiations pending is a
great though line from Palatka
through Macon to the East via Ath
ons and to the West via Knoxville.—
