All of the watches found in Neinitz’.-
possession were of Swiss manufacture.
He vehemently denies that either
watches or money had beeq stolen, and
declared that ho would not return to
Chicago without extradition proceed
ings.
Neinitz is accused of taking $5,000 in
cash and a lot of watches from the
Swiss exhibitors at the fair.
Nemitz came to Chicago last Februa
ry as the representative Of *34 watch
making firms of Switzerland, who com
bined to place their exhibits at the fair
under his charge. He had absolute au
thority over the joint display, which is
tvorth about $2,560,000.
Last Monday he did not appear at the
Swiss section in the Manufacturers’
Building. Later in the day one of the
sons took the cash box from the safe
an A went away with it. The couGaued
absence of Nemitz and his sons aroused
suspicion, and Commissioner Perrenond
ordered an investigation.
The safe was opened and the hooks
examined, and it was found that Ne
mitz had sold many watches, keeping
the proceeds, and had carried away
Others. Warrants for the arrest of Ne
mitz and his two sons were sworn out,
but they had fled.
Nemitz is well known to the govern
ment officials here. Soon after the ex
position opened he was arrested by spe
cial inspectors for selling goods-in boud.
The special case against him was sell
ing a brooch, valued at over $50, to a
Jady from Washington. He was brought
before Commissioner Ferine and held in
$5,000 bonds to the federal grand jury.
Harold Holinger, the Swiss consul,
signed the bond and Nemitz was re
leased. Subsequently the case against
Nemitz was dropped.
Some days ago information was pri
vately given tho special treasury agents
that Nemitz was not to be trusted. In
quiry was carefnlly made, and as a re
sult customs officers were put at work
on .tb* Swiss exhibit, comparing the
wares with the original invoices. Ne
mitz wired the Swiss minister at Wash
ington that the entire Swiss exhibit had
been seized. This telegram was sent
back to Consul Holinger, who immedi
ately replied that it was untrue. Cus
tom officers have commenced to check
Qp the exhibit of watches and other
foods- .
Nemitz is a native of Switzerland,
baa lived in-France, England and Bel-
C tlm, apeaks French fluently, and has
