Some Further News Regarding Alfred
Smith.
Alfred Smith, against whom there
s’ands the charge of assault with intent
to rape, has not yet been caught. He
has not left this section, however, and
will come to his trial whenever public
sentiment cools down Such is given
out by those who ought to know.
His brother, Harvey Smith, was in
the city yesterday, and to a Banned
reporter said that Alfred Smith was in
nocent, and that in a few days he would
furnish the public with information that
woul prove his assertions. Ho repeat
ed that the whole thirg wus a premedi
tated aff lir and a plot to run his brother
away from bis home. A genttem in re
turning from Watkinsville yesterday
afternoon said that sentiment there had
veered around to a large degree and
that now it was the general belief that
Smith was not guilty. The impression
in Athens on the testimony as pub
lished in the Banner was considerably
in Smith’s favor.
The idea advanced by the frien Is of
Smith is that Mrs Smith’s relatives are
at the bottom of it all. Mrs. Smith is a
d ugh ter of the late Stanoil Berwick, of
thia county.
The whole affair is a curious one, has
many queer and interesting points and
will only be fu ly known and under
stood by a judioial investigation.

The ' Augusta Chronicle says edi

We have our attention directed to
certain nil-ctions in our Athens cor
respondence upon Mr. Asbury Ho-’g
son, of that city, in connection with the
depjsit i f certain moneys raised from
the eale of water works bond*. First,
there were charges of bungling and s'.u-

charges of nting these public funds for
his own p rsunal gain. We uote the
o irrespondence:

much Mr. Hoi'gton made by placi r g

“As of one accord the citizsns all de
mand :
“ ‘Mayor Tuck explain yourself?”’
“ ‘Mr. Asbury Hodgson explain your
self, and tell how you made your little
pile out of this muddle?’”
We do not consider it the part cl'a
newspsper to make any such charges or
to report the speeches of others in which
charges of tbi i character are implied.
If Mr Hodgson was guilty of any con
duct making him amenable to the lavi
the < ffsnded parties had the right-to in
yoke the aid of the law, after which the
matter would have become legitimate
newspsper material. We do not con
sider vossip of the kind published, in

We wish so far as the Chronicle is
responsible for these redactions upon
Mr. Hodgson to withdraw them uncon
ditionally, and to express our regret at
the publication. The following lettei
in reference to the matter has bem
mailed to our correspocdent at Athens,
