Yesterday evening the north bornd
passenger train from Atlanta on the
Southern Railroad line stopped at Cur-
nelia, ten or fifteen passengers got oft
in order te change onto tbe Blue Ridge
cars to Tallulah Fa.Is. They weie
con'pelted to walk down beside along
line of freight cars tbat were standing
on tbe sine track, which is between the
main line and the Blue Ridge line.
Among these passengers were Messrs.
K. L. Mot?, Si. aid Charlie O’Farr* 11,
of Allens, and a lady and a little son
about seven years cl age from Colora
do, en route to some town on the Bfue
Ridge route. As the passengers Hied
down the track between the passenger
--.nd freight trains, the engineer of the
Blue Ridge route courteously carried
an umbrella over the lady, as it was
raining at the time. When the end of
the long lice of freight cars was reach
ed, the little bey and the engineer as
sisting the la iy, started to oross the
truck. Just as they stepped upon the
crack the cars began to move back, with
chat tudt.ee jtrk of frtight cars start-
log ofl. The back of the car struck
and shoved the little boy down the
traik, arid hi caught hild of the coup
ling ring that pri jecud out from the
end of the car.
Tbe engineer quickly reached to graD
the b< y and jeik fciin away. In doing
so he ieli beside the track, and tuokiog
up Lis feet tne train missed them, but
cut i it the end of his overcoat that waa
lying acres? ti.e track- In the mean'
time the mother of the little boy be
came horror struck abd unable to move.
The cuis were right ou her, and ju»t
bio whs about to fail Mr. O’Farrell
jumped forward and carried her off the
iraiis, willingly risking his litc
order to have a uhanco to rescue
Uie life ol a ieuow U£>ng.
The freight cars were signalled to start
by a trainmai_ on top of the oars. This
act of criminal negligence or more
properly oarolessoec--, should be look d
into by the officials of the road. The
cars should either not block up the pat-
s»ge way or if that is unavoidable they
should wait until the passenger tram
ieavba bsfore it begins to back out.
Tne bravery of Mr. O’Fariell was
highly applauded by his feiiow passen
gers, and by saving-this lady’s life he
saved tue radroad a damage suit that
would have camed them to lose -#25,1100.
Mr. O’Farrell's deed deserves recogni
