ABSOLUTELY PURE
ENDED IN SMOKE.
mu m mini im lies
(From an ar.icle entitled “ The Search
fur the Absolute Z iro,” by Beery
J. W. Dam, in McClure’s Magazine
foe November.;
Tbe zero of ataolnce temperature baa
long been indicated at a mysterious and
important point iu t wo ways. Tbe first
la tbe contraction of gases, which in all
kaown gases operates uniformly as the
temperature is lowered. As long as
they retain the gaseous state, gasee
shru k in volume so uniformly with
each added degree of cold that an exact
unvarying line of diminishing vc'ume
is established. This line it as unvary
ing as the pointing of tbe neeele to the
North I’oie. It cannot be explained
any more than the action of tbe needle
oan be explained. Aa every gas is
oooled, however, degree by degree, ii
points unerringly, by tbe law of dimin
ishing proportions, to a point at whiob
its volume would be nothing. If tbe
shrinkage continued, since tbe propor
tion ol loss of volume never varies, the
gas would shrink to nothingness. 1
could not do so, uf course; and all gases
sooner or Ister, fall out of the line by
becoming liquid, when the law oeases
to operate, and tbe proportion of con
traction iu volume ceases to be tbe
same. As long as they remain gases,
however—and the law u precisely the
same in all gases—they mechanically
point their figurative fingers indicate a
point which is 401 degrees b. low the
zero of tbe Fabreuheit thermometer.
In a similar way tbii point is aid in
dicated by ail tbe pure metals. At
ordinary temperatures tbe power oftne
pure metals to conduct < lectricity vaiies
exceedingly. Copper, iron, platinum,
and lead have very different capacities
in this regard. As they ate cooled,
however, a change lakes pises in all.
The resistance to the passage of elec
tricity decreases. Tbe (>oorest conduc
tors at ordinary temperatures are those
which tiler most resistance to theeltc-
trioai current. Under increasing cold
these become better oonduotors rapidly.
Tbe line of alteration in electrical re-
siatanoe, as tbe temperature goes down
ward, is not slike in any two. But tbs
lines of tbe several metals converge;
they come oloser and oloaer together aa
tbe temperature approaches, say 238 de
grees below zero * ahreubeit. And
their lines of convergence point, in the
same strange way as tbe gases, to the
tame point 4(11 degrees below zero Fah
renheit, as the point at which they
would all meet. In other words, these
is a point at which the electrical con-
duoticity of all pure metals would be
the same.

All tbe troop., agents and sympathizers
of tbe Chinese are to be withdrawn
from the peninsula of Korea. This is
an invitation for tho Japanese to greatly
augment their armies upon the peninsu

At a rapper party iu Bohemia the oth
er night a funny thing happened. A
beautiful maid came, attended by her
latest and most devoted cavalier. Now,
this beautiful maid is much addicted to
that habit which is said to make us
think Hke phi’odbphors—the nse of to
bacco in its daintiest form, the cigarette.
Tbe cavalier is ope of those illiberal
arid uncomfortableVonug men who hold
that all the vices and most of the enjoy
ments of life ore the monopoly of his
own sex, and lie is particluarly bitter in
his criticism of women who smoko.
The maid had carefully concealed
from him the fact that her ruby lips had
ever held a cigarette, but on tbe occa
sion of this supper party her desiro ov»r
-ame b* r discretion, and she arranged
*ith h r hostess and wrious confidants
that when the. cigarettes were passed
they should all urge her to “just try
one” to please them. The secret had
ecu confided to tbe mamma of the girl
jostess, but unfortunately the name of
the man who ns to be thus hoodwinked
had not been mentioned. Tbe cavalier
in question was seated at the right of
tho mamma, and that dear lady, finding
him a bit difficult -in conversation,
thought to make it pleasant for him by
telling hi; i the whole story, which she
did, with little ripples of laughter, add
ing, ‘‘Of < ourse yon know the maid ia
an invetei ate smoker. ” *
Meanwhile at the other end of the ta
ble the cigarettes were being lighted,
and the beautiful maid was protesting
that really she “didn’t dare,” “it
would make her sick,” etc., and finally,
with a conciliatory glance toward the
swain, yielding and lighting a Neston,
while a light of ineffable satisfaction
came into her lovely evee. The youth
became even more difficult to entertain
after this, and what happened on the
way home no man knoweth, but now
they meet os strangers, and so, alas and
alack, another of love’s young dreams

iu their operations by wfiieh' the obelisks
were out out in single immense blocks.
Water will be poured in, and tho timber
will swell, exerting ayowerful pressure.
Then, by means of 'electric appliances
the iron bars or bloets-will be quickly
heated to a high temp&ature and there
by expand, adding greatly to tbe force
which the swelling timbers will bo put
ting forth. Last of all, the entiro Chi
nese army will bo set to work in the
trench, which will ho hundreds of miles
ong. Each man will he armed with a
powerful hydraulic jack, which he
will operate when the iron and wood
are gettiug in their best work.
The bedrock slopes seaward, and
the result may be better imagined than
described. The shale, having been
thoroughly lubricated, will slip with
comparative ease on the smooth surface
of the nook, so think the Chinese engi
neers. Thus, when the millions of tons
of pressure is brought to bear, the en
tire peninsula is expected to start slow
ly on its foundations.. Then, as the great
mass gathers headway like a launching
ship, it will increase its speed and final
ly dash into the Japan sea.
Instant and complete destruction will
fall upon tbe armies of the mikado as
well as upon every man, woman and
child in Korea Nothing in the way of
annihilation can compare with this ex
cept perhaps the fate of Pharaoh's army
in the Red sea
Tho iniuo diate effect upon the Japan
sea can scarcely he imagined. The Chi
nese warships will have been withdraw
to some safe haven, and the total <h
struction of nearly all of Japan’s nav
is assured.
The tidal wave is expected to alums
wipe out the Japan islands. T'jov.'aroi
will probably pour over Lie i lands an.
sweep them of every vestige of auinia
and vegetable life.
This may sound like tho dream of
insane man, and iu order to carry
weight with it your correspondent had
the affidavits of bis informants duly
prepared. Unfortunately, however, the
Chinese notaries have a seal nearly lour
inches in diameter, so wlieu an attempt
was made to cable the affidavits they
stuck, as the cable is only 3)4 inches
through. —Loo-Jao Special to Cleveland
