Atlanta, Ga., Nov. 1.—[Special.] —
It iaSeDator Bacon!
The lengbtby and heated conteat that
has been waved between Messrs B -
con, Turner* Garrard and Walsh is at
an end.
Major Bacon has from the beginning
b *en considered the leading candidate
for the Senatorsbip, but bis opponent*
bave never oonceded him enough votes
o eleot him on the first ballot.
The whole fight seemed to centre on
- reventiDg tbe nomination of Ma|or
Baoon on the first ballot, but tbe Bibb
j unty statesman succeeded in making
tbe landing.
Each candidate had hia friends there
n his behalf, and a hotter campaign
was never waged than that which has
been oarried on in this city for the pa t
tew weeks.
Everything was exoitement when
Hon. A. A. Junkies, of PutnaD, called
t ie Democratic caucus to order at half
put three o’clock.
Afetr arranging a few preliminary
fairs (the balloting commenced. At
4 st it was thought that the opposition
to Bacon would prevent bis nomination
in the first ballot, but gradually be
nulled away from all other competitors,
«nd passed under the string any easy
winner.
The vote stood:
Bacon 1)3.
Turner 37.
Uarrard 31.
Walsh 9.
Tbe nomination of Major Baoon was
then made unanimous, and when the r< -
f ult was oommunicated to the outsiders,
his friends were vary jubilont.
The short term will be filled by Sen-
uor Walsb, who was unanimously
chosen by the caucus.

several terms with the speakership if

As a presiding officer He has nev'n
been surpassed by anyone who has been
called upon to preside over the delib
erations of the Georgia bouse of repr< -
sentatives.
When the lamented Stephens fell
asleep Major Bioon was a candidate for
tbe office thus made vacant. He was a
majority oa<-didate and came within a
few votes of election. These necesaary
votes he couldn’t get on account of a
deadlock, and Gov. MoDaniel was
elected. Everyone is familiar with bis
memorable race against General Gordon

Since that time be hag ably reprr-

years in tbe bouse and nc w is elevated
o tbe high office of Senator.

Yesterday on a Macon A Northern
freight train there waa sent to the
Dixie Fair an exhibit from Mr. A
Bertling of hit fancy breed of chickeoe,
pigeons and dogs. That the exhibit
contains prize winners, first prize win
ners at that, any one who baa ever aeon
Mr. Bertling’s dog kennels and poultry
yard will stake hia last cent upon it.
There were fancy pigeon?, bull
Cochin*, Scotch Collies and St. Ber
nard dog*. Every specimen was in the
pink of condition, and showed not only
that they bad received careful atten
tion in the raising of them, bat that
they were descendants of specimh's
that had been on a similar exhibit and
khvaysTeeeived a prize.
This industry although it ia quite
novelty for Clarke county, ia neverthe
less when well mansged, one source of
considerable reveaue to the breeder,
and alto bas tbe tendency to make
other people appreciate what benefits
arise from careful aelcctious for breed
ing purpose*. Thia idea when followed
out even in the country farm yard,
will in a few years double the grade of
the horse*, hogs, chickens »r whatever
is raised, by the farmers using careful
judgment in tbe selection of breedirg
mates.
Mr. Bertling has a St. Bernar* out at
bis k«mnels that has been over to the
dog fhow in London twice, each time
winning a disc prise. He naturally
values the dog very highly, although
he has other dogs that he considers as
fine a specimen as this one.
This exhibit of Mr. Bertling’s will
not only nuke an attractive addition to
tbe Dixie Fair, hut it will serve to ar -
vertise one industry iq, Athens, and ev
ery industry in Clarke county should
bave sent along an exhibit. It will re
pay to tbe sender ten-fol 1 tbe expen
ses of sendirg tbo exbibi’, and ft will In
addition, advertise our city. Mr. Berl-
ling’s exhibit is a fine one.

Clarke County baa an industry which

Dr. Carlton ia la charge of the ml’l
and Is making quite a * access of the
enterprise.
A few weeks since he received an
order for forty thousand bobbins from
one of the largest mills in North Caro-
lits, and ia now engaged In filling that
order at the rate of of three thousand
bobbins per day.
Ten men are employed In tbe work of
the bobbin mill, and It keeps them busy
all the time.
Dr. Carlton haa laid in enough dog
wood and birch to last him for three
yeara and ia prepared to ran the mill to
its full capacity from now on.
This mill is an instance of what can
be done in the way of small manu
factories in our county, and the auooesa
attending lta operation should bp an in
centive to the erection of other manu
factories.
They give employment to a number
of people, and manufacture articles that
generally are purchased from the
North.

Last night the Mabel Paige Company
played to a large and appreciative au
dience. From the moment tbe curtain
roae in tbe first act, till it went down,
shotting out from view tbe able troupe
of actors in the last act, the audietce
was kept in a continuous condition of
laughter and excitement.
To criticise the pretty little star’s
acting would be only to repeat tbe
praises that have already been previ
ously written in former articles.
Mr. Woodward, as in the previous
plays, was constantly encored, and the
Misses Warren and E mi son deserve e -
pecial mention, for tbe naturalness in
whieh they played the parts assigned
them.
The plot of tbe play last night at
lowed tbe entire troupe to exhibit their
many specialties, and as their desire i»
to appeal to the humorous side of mac-
kind, tbe applause that was given them
last night was a oomp’iment to the tuc-
oess of their undertaking.
