The introductory part of the book is
devoted to an interesting history of the
University from its foundation In 17s5
to the present date, and Mr. Hull in his
own inimitable way g tea on to tell of

Tbe Are tlarin was turned in eaily
yesterday mornir g, about b»lf-past one
o’clock, and toe Iran p-ngof the horars
and the ringing of the gong on tbe en
gines woke up from their peaceful
slumbers tbe Athenians living on
Prince avei.ue, who ran to the windows
to gsze out upon a starlight sky, but
discovering no semblance of a conlla-
gration went back^ to bed each one
thinking that a too heavy supper had
brought on indigestion and its after
result—a nightmare. Some remember
ing the advertisements in Tub Bankxf
of different patent pills, hunted up their
baedicine chests and took, acc vdmg f<
directions, a pill or two, for their sup
posed troub’.er.
There was, however, a small fire out
at tue car shed which had been seen by
one of the employees of the street rail
road as he was returning to bis home.
He noticed a b igbt 1 >:bt in tbe work
Shops, which is on tbe groun 1 floor of
the abed, and he quickly discerned that
tbe shop was on Are. As there were no
other men to help him extinguish the
small blaze, he turned in tbe Are alarm
and afterward- shouted Are so as to
alarm tbe les de’i's of houses near by.
Foreman Hughes of the wo k'hop, who
lives near by, heard the alarm and ran
to the assi-ta ce of Mr. Rr wn, tbe man
who bad discovered tb<* Are. Together
they extinguished the II imes before the
Are companies arriyed upon tbe scenes.
The origin of the Ari Is utknowr. It
had started in a pile of shavings lying
on the Aoor of the woiksh p and had
not Mr. Brown so fortunately passed
along within sight of tbe shed at thr
time be did the whole building, which
contained every car, tools and para
phernalia necessary to cp-race the 1 n ,
exo p the dynamos and engine, would
have been destr v d, and Athenians
would have been without their muchly
pr z d and necessary mole of transpor
tation, the trolley care.
Whether the Are was of an incendiary
origin or whether some matches were
ignited by rats chewing on them is not
known.,
The damage done was very small,
only a few utensils were scorched and
tbe floor was flooded with wa'er.

Paris. Nov. 1.—The arrest of Cap

staff, on tbe charg i of treason aud es

is tbe sensation of the hour. The cap
tain was attached to tbe organization
and mobilizing department of the gen

to some of the most important docu

lizing the French army.
. Suspicion against Captain Dreyfus
was aroused by his intimacy with an
Italian officer, and Gnuexal Merci«r, tbe
minister of war, cansed detectives to be
sent to Monaco and to Italy, with tha
result that Captain Dreyfus is now un

A BAD WRECK.
Although It Wu Not Nor So Fatal as
First Reported.
Auckland, New Zealand, Nov. L—
Further particulars in regard to the
wreck of the Uuiou line steamship
Wairarapa, Captain McIntosh, bound
from Sydney, N. 9. W.,for this port,
which was wrecked on Sunday night
off Great Barrier island on the north
east coast of New Zealand, show that
the loss of life was not so great as at
first reported.
The first reports had it that 112 of the
Wairarapa’b passengers were drowned,
but now it seems that 81 passengers and
40 of the crew were saved by the lines
thrown ashore aud by the boats of the
steamer.
On the other hand, Captain McIntosh,
68 passengers and 20 of the steamship
crew were drowned. At least the -e are
the figures which are given out ,by

DESTROYING THE STAMPS.
Thousands ef New One Center* Were Not
Fit For Use.
Washington, Nov. 1.—Third Assist
ant Postmaster General Craige has or
dered tho destruction of thousands of
the recent first issue:’ of postage stamps
turned out by the bureau of engraving
aud printing.
This action has been taken as a result
of complaints received from postmas
ters all over the country that the scamps
were unfit lor use on account of the
lack of mucilage on them. The post-
office department directed postmasters
to return the stamps which were not
thoroughly coated with mucilage, and
all of the stamps returned have been
destroyed.
The stamps now being turned out are
said to be of tbe best quality, and no
further complaints are being received
from the postmasters to whom they
were consigned.
