The Belgians Live on Horecmcat
Nearly Excluetveiy.
Tna Hagub Hoi., Oc*. 16, 1894.—
Shortly after my arrival iu Antwerp
I was sauntering up one of the princi
pal thoroughfares of the city. W hen 1
was attracted by the picture of a
horses’ head handsomely painted on a
large plate glass window with the sign
below, Horsemeat market. I had heard
ooming over on the ship that horsemeat
was extensively eaten in Belgium.
But the enormity of it did not strike
me until laaw thia sign upon the win
dow, and looking within, saw the huge
(idea and quarters of horsemeat hang
ing upon the wall or out into steaks
and roasts as the ease might be. Be
hind the chopping block on the floor
lay a halt doaen or more shin bones
with the horses hoofs still attached.
There was now nodonbt of it, Itwas
all horsemeat and a good business the
proprietor was doing to. He waited on
and sold to at least five or six custom
er* in the twenty minutes I was there.
The pnoe ran from 30 to 60 centimes
per pound or 5 to 10 oents per pound
American money, upon inquiry, 1
I found there was nearly three hundred
snob plaoes in Antwerp alone, and that
all the wortt out orippled np draft
and street oar borsea from London and
all parta of England were shipped to
Antwerp and sold as meat. Beef ia
very high. I paid 17 canta per pound
for every pound of meat I need in Ant
werp. Tne Indiana were muoh exer
cised when they heard that horsemeat
was sold aa food. Thty met the butcher
daily for weeks to inspect bis meat, and
it waa not until 1 thoroughly explained
to thorn that only oertain placet was
licensed to sell horsemeat and that our
butoher had no such license that they
quieted. .Horaemeet is principally
eaten by the poor people, but not en
tirely, however. I have met many
well to do people who say horsemeat
is much sweeter and juicier than beef.
1 vu invited by Baron Mur at us
itue Vanderbilt if Belgium.) to visit
liis racing stables.' During our conver
sation oc h*:*iies it run to the traffic
in horsemeat aa food, and be was sur
prised to know I had neven eaten it.
He was quick to say it waa sweeter and
more palatable than any beef, and he be
lieved it fully aa healthy, but I had to
differ with him and eoujd not help say
ing I bad ridden a horse all my life and
had by lar too muoh reepeot for him to
oven eat horsemeat.
