The cry of hard times is no justifies -
tion for npglecting educational matter
and the legislature esnnot do a wiser
thing than to make a liberal appropria

advocated by Chancellor Boggi in bis
recent able address before that body
Higher education is the chief bu!
wark of civilisation, and of civil and re
ligious liberty; and it is Ibe du'y of
the state to add to the usefulness and
fllciency of her University by judicious
»cd libirsl appropriations from time to
t!01'.
It has bsen some years since the st»
did anything towards enlarging t>
buildin ;s of the University ; the late*
addition being built bv the city of
Athene, notwithstanding the crowded
condition of that time honored institu
tion,
Georgia should have a thousand stu
dents at Franklin college alone, arid she
migh- have, if proper buil lings and
facilities were added. No abler body of
edueatora grace any American institu
tion than the faculty of the University
of Georgia; they are men of the Lights
order of ability and acquirements, and
ire doing a splendid work in preparing
for the duties of the higher walk' of
Iffe the young men in their oharge.
Georgia must have governors, sena
tors, congressmen, judges, bishrps,
preachers, doctors, 1 iw yera, j turnalist
and teachers, and the higher and broad
their edneation the better aervice
they can render the state; and while the
tduoation of the masses ia by no means
to be neglected, the stateowes a solemn
duty to the University shove all others,
that the Legislature shod 1 not hedtate
to discharge.
The Univeraity at Athens is crimped,
a new building is needed, the oi l ones
need improvemei ti and enlargement',
and the very moderate sppronr. t oo
of $25,000 asked for by Dr Biggt should

No maa can peruse It even casually without
being astonished at the Information he wiU

Ten minutes with the Encyclopaedia
Brltannlca will convince the ordinary man of
two things—first, of how llttlt he really knows;
second, how much there Is he can readily
acquire. Then, too. the Information may bo
railed upon. It Is absolute authority upon all
subjects.
Dr. Lyman Abbott says on this point: “Th*
Encyclopaedia Baltannica Is without a peer
la the whole noble army of encyclopaedias,
ba recognized authority among scientific and
literary men.”
Do not forget that you can secure the entire
twenty-eight volumes at one* by paying S$ per
month; or fourteen volumes will ba delivered i
a time for to ceata a day. payable monthly.
