MB. BRYAN'S RINGING WORDS.
Dollar wheat lias canned a great many
psopks to jump at the conclusion that
the free coinage of silver issue is dead.
Thus it always has been and always will
be with the unthinking element of the
population of this republic. A wave of
prosperity, be it ever so temporary and
ever so unstable, is always jumped at by
such people as the return of good times
and the settlement of all issues of
government.
Mr. Biyau in ins latest utterance,
through the columns of the New York
World, clearly shows the fallacy of the
argument that dollar wheat has killed
the silver movement. Mr. Bryan’s
words are worthy the serious considera
tion of idl liberty-loving Americans.
The Republican party is in nowise re
sponsible for dollar wheat. That Is dne
to a famine in India and to short crops
Europe. If cotton should go to ten
eents, the Republican party would no
doubt claim credit for it, but if it goes
to five cents, as it looks now it will, the
O. P. will promptly saddle it on some
other agency. The rise in wheat is
bringing European money to tins coun
try, thus increasing the amount of mou
in circulation in the United States.
The increase of money in circulation
what is causing prosperity in the West.
The silver cause is that of an increased
oluiuc of metallic money, the money
of final redemption. It, too, will bring
prosperity whenever it is tried. The
increase in volume of money in circula
tion now caused by the rise in wheat
and the exporting,of large quantities to
Europe may be cut off next year, hut the
free coinage of silver will bring about a
permanent increase in the money of the
country that will adapt itself to the in
crease in business and the need for nion
ev with which to carry on business.
THE WORK OF*SPECULATORS.
Cotton for the past few days has been
steadily declining in price, and the de
lining values cannot Is- traced alone to
the big crop that will be made this sea
son. While it is true that the crop may
reach ten million bales this year, it is
likewise true that the usual surplus of
one million to one and a half millions of
bales is not on hand at the beginning of
this season. Hence instead of this crop
lieiug rated at ten millions of bales it
should he put down at eight and one
half to nine million bales. Hence with
notliiug in excess of an average crop in
sight and with a steady demand for the
fleecy staple coming from all the manu
facturing interests, it would seem that
cotton would remain steady at seven
cents as the smallest figure*.
Such is not the case, however, as the
price has already gone below that fig
ure, and then* are many who dec lare it
will decline until it reaches five cents,
Just here' is where the specnlatiem comes
in, anel where: the New York cotton ex
change: decs its work. The de-ale:rs in
cotton future's have domemstruted their
great power very fore-iblv this e arly in
the season. Tlie:y have: shown how they
cam override ail actual demand for the
staple anel cut elowu the price: when ev
ery reasonable law erf trade; says it should
be at least one cent per pound higher.
If the New York cotton e'xe'hange were
out erf the: way just jiow the farmers of
the; South would be: much better off.
AS TO THE STATE LIBRARIAN.
The marriage of Miss Ellen Dorteli to
General James B. Longstreet today at
the governor’s mansion in Atlanta will
in all probability remove that lady from
the race for State librarian, although
Miss Dortch has not as yet said that
such will be the case. The prevailing
impression is that Governor Atkinson
will appoint some weirthy Confederate
veteran to that position, and that the
new librarian will be allowed to name
his assistant, who will in all probability
woman. Governor Atkinson has
qnite a number of uajnes nnder con
sideration for this positiou, but will
hardly make the appointment before the
legislature meets next mouth.

HARRISON FILES ANSWER.
THE REVIVAL OF INDUSTRIES
AND BUSINESS.
Then: is a noticeable revival of pros
perity among the manufacturing indos
tries of Athens and Clarke county that
bodes well for the advancement of the
interests of onr people. The cotton mills
are increasing their plants and putting
in electric apparatus with which todrive
their machinery. The knitting mill bus
iness is growing rapidly and a new mill
is to be established. Other small indus
tries are being discussed and movements
are being being started to organize them
on a successful basis. The business in.
terests of the city also show distinct evi
deuces of advancement. The real estate
market here is active, a number of pur
chases are being reported, and new
houses are being erected all over the
city. The educational institutions of
the city are in the very best condition
and show a growing improvement each
year. New citizens are locating in Ath
ens each week and thus she advances
steadily in population. The people of
Athens have firmly made up their minds
to push their city to the very front rank
in the prosperity procession.

Co-Lcasce of E- A. Richards In the Northeastern
Deal.
Atlanta, Gu., Sept. 7.—Mr. ,Jame?‘P.
Harrison, who was E. A. Richards’
partner in the Northeastern railroad
venture, has filed an answer to the gov
ernor’s suit for rental, denying all
liability for the amount that is due the
State.
Mr. Harrison admits he was a member
of the firm of E. A. Richards & Co. and
that the firm agreed to lease the North
eastern from the State for $18,600 per
annum. He also admits that a 20-year
contract was made providing that the
rental should be paid quarterly.
Mr. Harrison does not deny that $8,-
060, besides interest", was due the State
when the property was seized by the
governor, but alleges that he is in no
way responsible for this state of affairs,
The answer recites that previous to the
seizure Harrison had filed a petition
asking the appointment of a receiver to
take charge of the property, and that
Judge N. L. Hutchins bad appointed the
receiver.
Mr. Harrison claims that the appoint
ment of the receiver should have been the
sigmil for the governor to seize the road,
and alleges that it was the end of the
contract between him, Harrison, and the
State. The fact that the road was not
seized until some time after receiver
took charge, Harrison claims, relieves
him from any responsibility as to the
rental that is due and unpaid.

THE REID MURDER TRIAL.
Verdict Will be Reached In this Interesting Case
Today.
Macon, Sept. 7.—The Reid case, lias
progressed mnch more rapidly than was
anticipated. The fact that the jury was
secured by noon yesterday watPa big
surprise.
So far everything has gone in favor of
Reid. It will be no surprise to a large
number of people if he is acquitted. The
State’s case has not been a strong one.
The State closed last night shortly
before six o’clock.
Among the witnesses on the stand for
the State was Mrs. L. W. Halstead, the
widow of the dead man. Solicitor Gen
eral Hodges put*her upon the stand frr
the purpose of proving that the body
buried at Clarkesville was that of her
husband, L. W. Halstead. She gave her
evidence without any attempt at-- dra
matic display.
All the witnesses were cross examined
closely and very cleverly by counsel for
the defense. Mr. Washington Dessau is
conducting a very strong line for Reid.
He is as usual alert and careful, never
losing a point.

The yellow fever scourge is abroad in
lower Mississippi.
It lias already caused Ocean Springs
to be depopulated and of the 2,000 in
habitants of that prosperous little place
very few are remaining.
It has made its appearance in New
Orleans, and the health authorities admit
that several real cases of yellow fever
have been found in that city.
One or two deaths from the scourge
have resulted in New Orleans, but the
health authorities of that city believe
they will In* able to hold the plague in
check there.
Mr. Charles A. Scudder has received a
letter from his brother-in-law, Rev. N.
Kelt Smith, pastor of the Presbyterian
church at Ocean Springs, stating that
he and his entire family had had the fe
ver and had about recovered.
Mr. Scudder is not certain about what
kind of fever Mr. Smith and liis family
had and is yet apprehensive concerning
them.
The board of health will take active
measures lo stop any progress of the
plague.
It is understood that at the meeting
there will be some modification of the
regulations adopted yesterday, quaran
tining the entire coast and steps will Ik 1
aken to allow residents of New Orleans
who are sojourning at unaffected ports
to return to the city after having been
properly examined and furnished with
certificates that they have not been in
proximity to any eases of yellow fever.
Although the action of Mobile and Gal
veston in quarantining New Orleans is
naturally resented, there is no’disposition
here to retaliate unless fever shall ap
pear ill one or 7 otli of those citias.

He May be the Tammany Candidate lor Mayor
of New York.
"New York, Sept. 7.—Richard Croker
was a passenger by the American line
steamer New York, which arrived at her
dock early today.
Mr. Croker’s fellow-passengers lave
come to the conclusion that he is to be
the Tammany Hull candidate for mayor
of New York. During the voyage many
efforts were made to draw Mr. Croker
out on the subject, but not only to news
paper correspondents, but to his most in
timate friends on board, did he decline
to state his purpose. The understanding
among Mr. Croker’s friends, however,
is that he is very strongly inclined to
permit the use of his name as a candi
date for mayor, though he is naturally
unwilling that an announcement should
be made to this effect before he has had
an opportunity to confer with his lieu
tenants.
