convicts have to be called in and the
county will be put to considerable ox-
jiense in maintaining them.
It lias been found that the comity can
work free labor on the roads to a l*tter
advantage and at less cost than convict
later.
Had not the convicts teen put l«ack
upon the county, the rate could have
been reduced largely and the road work
continued in full blast. Provision had
to be made for a stockade for the pris
oners and other necessities.
The county officials, who met. yester
day to fix the tax rate figured in every
Way possible to get tl e rate down, but it
could not be done.
The rate last year was $8.94 on each
thousand dollars. This year it will be

Quite a number of negroes were ar-
rested, in fact all those* who were on the

The general belief is that it is a crazy
negro, and that he is liable to repeat las I

Oue of the police force said last night
that he believed it was a certain negro
who was not crazy, bnt who was one of
the meanest negroes in the city.

football team has arrived in the city.
He comes with the determination to
make this year’s football aggregation a

summer in the work of canvassing for
new students who will take a prominent
part in athletics.

operated with him have succeeded in se
