Pre-Asd Past MShaMUs.
The Pre-and Post Millennialists had
quite a wrangle at Toccoa over some
thing they did not seem to know much
or anything about. If they had spent
the same time and the same breath in
preaching the Christ that has come and
is now manifest on earth in present
Christian life and example, they would
have been engaged in mere rational and
profitable work, done more good, com
manded more respect and more follow
ers and returned to their homes preach
ers of the gospel, and the true plan of
salvation through Christ and him cruci
fied, rather than scientific and theologi
cal speculators and millennium dream
ers. Oh, that the world conld again be
blessed with that good old-time religion,
when camp meetings and class-meetings
took the place of up-to-date conventions
and associations, when meeting houses
was a ntcue acceptable name than
churches and cathedrals, and wheu true,
enuine, old fashion religion took the
:e of the present scientific theology,
octrinal views and sectarian jealousies.
This editorial brought forth the fol
lowing letter couched in such elegant
^and courteous expressions and accompa-
ied with such peremptory demand as
to estop us from making personal
answer thereto and induces us to give
it to the public with snch comments as
may seem fitting.
Editor Athens Banner, City.
Dear Sir:—I regret to see the spirit
ifested in your editorial in Sunday’s
iter on “Preund Post Millennialists.”
The article does not state the facts
d seems to me unnecessary and rai
led for. Further it does those, who
at Toceoa a great injustice. The
of criticism is so objectionable that
uless a full correction is published, and
subject and convention placed in its
rue light before tlie people, I feel I
Minnot consistently subscribe to a paper
thus treats so sacred and so im
portant a subject.
I hope you will see your way char to
investigate the matter, and give the
public the benefit of a true statement.
Yours respectfully,
Clms. A. Rowland, Jr.
As to the editorial in question, we
lrnve no apologies to offer, no retractions,
no corrections, no modifications to make,
simply. becanse the trntli. the whole
truth and nothing bnt the truth, needs
no apology, and will permit of no retrac
tion, no correction, no modification
That there was quite a “wrangle”
ov%r this question, the whole weeks dis
cussion at Toocoa, will be sufficient
proof to any intelligent and compre
hensive mind. And for the edification
of our offended young friend, we will
add that “wrangle” is often used
synonymously with discussion. That
those engaged in the discussion, as the
many millennialists, who have gone
before them, were widely disagreed and
consequently did not seem to know much
positively about the matter, was to our
mind easily disceruable from the pub
lislied discourses themselves.
From the results of that meeting and
discussion, and from the presumable
ability and piety of the distinguished
divines engaged in it, we agabi repeat
“that if the same time and the same
breath had been spent in preaching the
Christ that lias come, and is now mani
fest on earth in present Christian fife
and example, they would liave been
engaged in more rational and profitable
work, done more good, etc.”
As the discussion and the disagree
meut as to millennialisni has been going
on in this world from time immemorial
and without any very good or Listing
results often times producing the wildest
and most irrational theories, we presume
these reverend gentlemen themselves
will make no open issue with us on this
point oar young milleuuialist friend to
the contrary notwithstanding.
Now as to. the latter or concluding
part of oar article addressed to all mod
ern day religionists, irrespective of ec
desiastical connection or creed, there
could be no better evidence of such need
than is found in t-lie spirit manifested in
the letter of our young aud sensitive
friend.
As to whether our friend wrote from
the standpoint of a presbyterian or a
milleuuialist we do not know. If from
the former, then he is assuming a great
deal to think presbyterians are the only
millennialists and shows on liis part a
very circumscribed knowledge of the
subject he seems to think we have treat
ed lightly and unjustly. If from the
latter, then his millennial bigotry has
gotten ao much the better, of him as to
make any dissension from his individual
views and convictions unpardonable,
odious aud altogether offensive to his
mast sensitive, religious conscience.
It is true that the assembly at Toocoa
was composed chiefly of presbyterians,
bnt if we mentioned presbyterians in
and intention
lence to our thoughts aud purpose,
spoke of
sense, as they are confined to no
ular denomination, having no
reference to our presbyterian friends,
and treated the discussion at Toocoa, of
a subject as old and hackneyed as is the
questiou as to who was the author of
Junius’ letters, as a mere incident. We
did not note as to who engaged in that
discussion, we did not enquire, nor did
we care. Our editorial was really
prompted by a discussion we had with a
most excellent and highly esteemed
baptist friend and citizen of Athens,
whose views, as a millenniafist were
probably far more extreme than any ad
vanced at Toccoa.
Let ns say in all kindness that if our
young friend thinks be will get all
others to agree with him in his
doubtless extreme milleunialistic views,
and that by reason of his particular con
victions he can circumscribe or suppress
the views of others aud especially our
self, tben be is as badly mistaken, as he is
in error in interpreting the meaning and
purpose of our editorial.
Again, if Ins conscience is so sensitive
and bis religions sensibilities so keenly
alive as to be offended by the views of
others, equally honest with himself,
then we would most earnestly entreat
him to heed the admonition contained
in tlie closing paragraph of our edito
rial.
It of course will be a very great aud
ruinous shock to ns to lose our young
friend us a subscriber so early in our
journalistic career, bnt we will try aud
bear it, if lie will give up the reading of
the Banner for a more liberal and com
prehensive reading of the Bible accom
panied with such fife as will concern
him more abont the fitness to meet the
coming Christ than wliat we write in
the Banner, and thus become so liberal,
so Christianized, and so charitable that
when he fails to have all men agree
with him he will not be conscience dis
tressed and rashly do tl>t which may
harm him more than anyone else.
