The question of the correct boundary
line between the states of Georgia and
Temiaske** is one one of the rarest im-
jjortniice just now.
Those who ltave been investigating it
have raised an issue as to the location of
the city of Chattanooga.
A Chattanooga lawyer discussing this
subject says:
"There lias always licen a dispute
alxmt the true line lietween this state
and Georgia. The boundary line be
tween this state and Georgia liegins at
a point in the true parallel of the 35th
degree of north latatude, as found by
Juntos Camnk, mathenuitician, on the
part of the State of Georgia, and James
S. Gaines, mathematician, on the part
of the State of Tennessee, on a risk
about two feet high, four inches thick
and 15 inches broad, engraved on the
north side thus : •June 1st, 1818, Vur.
ti3-4, east,' and on the south side thus:
‘Geo. :i5 north. J. Cainak,’ which risk
stands one mile and 28 (Miles from the
south bank of the Tennessee river, due
south from near the center of the old
Indian town of Nick-a-Juck, and near
the top of Nick-a-Jnek mountain at the
supposed corner of the States of Georgia
and Alabama.
“This is the line in dispute. How far
over the Georgian claim that it comes
from that now recognized I do not know,
but l have heard Lookout Point claimed
by grasping, citizens of our southern sis
ter. Our legislature officially recog
nized the dispute in 18H!i.
Yesterday morning Mr. James \V.
Camuk, of this city brought to the Ban
ner office the report made by bis grand
father, I)r. James Oamak. who was the
mathematician representing Georgia.
This report also contains figures on the
Imumlarics between Georgia, Alaliama,
North Carolina and Florida.
Uefcivncc is made in the editorial col
umns of this issue to this report of Dr.
Camuk. Dr. Camuk states that he be
lieves the line between Georgia and
Tennessee was placed two far south.
Dr. Cainak winds up his report as fol
lows : I pretend not to decide positive
ly whether the observations of 1818, or
those of 1826,' are entitled ton preference.
In IM8. I requested Gov. Rabun to pro
cure such apparatus as would Ivc neces
sary, to enable me to perform my duties
with the greatest possible accuracy.
The shortness of the time would not ad
mit of sending abroad for them and
hence I was under the necessity of using
such as could lie procured at Athens.
The instrument, a sextant, was a very
good one, of English construction. The
situation of tlie observatory, on the top
of a mountain, was favorable to accu
racy. But the astronomical tables
which I was compelled to use were not
such as I could have wished them to be.
I regret that I have lost the register of
mv observations, so that 1 am unable.

All night Thursday the policemen
searched for the negro who liad struck
the two ladies on the streets of Athens.
Quite a number of negroes were ar
rested and brought forward for identifi
cation, but as fast as they were brought
in they were released.
Two darkies, named Lester and
Brown, were locked up for the night,
but were released yesterday morning.
"Fiddler,” the half idiotic negro, was
arrested yesterday morning, but was
promptly declared not to l»e the negro
wanted.
A negro was located yesterday morn
ing in a cane field near the car shed on
the Boulevard, but before the policemen
could get there he bad gone. He filled
the description of the negro wanted.
It developed yesterday that several
other ladies had been struck or fright-
eimd by this negro. He seems to have
determined to strike or frighten every
lady he meets.
Judge A. L. Mitchell saw the negro
Thursday night running past his house
on Dougherty street just after Mrs.
lturhwnld was struck, but not knowing
of the affair, of course made no attempt
to stop him.
During the day several darkies were
brought fe the station house, but eaeli
time it was found that the real criminal
was still at liberty.
Last night Chief Culp put the entire
police force to work upon the ease, lmt
in spite of the !<est efforts they could put
forth the negro has not yet been found.

Mrs. Vincent had reached the age of
eighty-four years aud was one of the
oldest and most highly esteemed citizens
of Atheus.
The greater part of her long life was
spent in Clarke county and as u citizen
of Athens, She was the widow of Capt.
Isaac S. Vincent, a brave veteran of the
Indian wars and commander of the
Clarke Rifles during the civil war until
his death, which occurred in 1861.
Mrs. Vincent had for many decades
been a consistent and useful member of
the Methodist church and a most regu-
