It is probably the general impression
that, pouters anil handbills are modern
intentions, but it has just been discover
ed that the ancient Romans practiced
this method of advertising. In digging
at Herculaneum there was brought to
light a pillar covered with bills, one on
top of another. The paste used to stick
them was made of gmnarabic. The
bills, when separated and examined,
were found to he programmes and an
nouncements of public meetings, and
even election proclamations.
