WORDS OF WISDOM.
The Birmingham Age-Herald wisely
pat# it thus: '
Thoughtful citiaeu# in many State#
are beginning to think there are too
many laws. Every year the uational
and local statesmen meet and go to
work winking laws as if the situation of
world depended upon them. Code fol
lows code, only to be tinkered, amended
or destroyed by new corps of legislators.
Overworked supreme courts flash their
guesses into print from flay to day, but
the tangle grows worse all the time. It
would be a blessing to tbe country to
rock along for at least ten years without
a single new statute.”
In no State in this Union has the
making of new laws and the tinkering
with old ones become more an evil than
here in our own Georgia. The fact is,
that even with the aid of our Supreme
court, it is a hard matter to know exact
ly what the law is.
Subscriber* arc requesud to promptly notify
the business office of late delivery, failure to
curry papers to porches or failure to deliver
With absolute regularity on the-pMt of the car-
/ rim*. Such notification is the only jntjaus °f
’ knowing of the existence of any cutwe y
plaint, and will be appreciated
It is now in order for some student of
the conditions and relations in human
society to write a treatise on “the Eth
ics of strikes."
Prosperity which comes of accident or
misfortune can never be stable or en
during. What the country wants is not
sporadic prosperity but that which
comes of the bettered condition of the
whole people and of the whole country
and which will remain with us when it
gets here.

OUR PUBLIC ROADS.
The improvement made upon our pub
lic roads under the administration of Mr.
T. P. Stanley has demonstrated to our
people the value and importance of the
work, and that it should lx- pursued un
til every public road iu our county has
, been put in first-class condition.
Now that tlie law against leasing out
misdemeanor convicts to private parties
enforced—throwing them npou
respective counties to be cared far,
t tjjgifejan^ur, jjj^dic
under proper regulations and
uagement as the best disposition that
^n be made of them.
In this connection we would suggest
,t a bill be passed at the next session
the legislature providing for such
ge in the selection of our raid eom-
iouers as will secure tbe very best
ess men of the respective counties;
will insure the most substantial
(ivement in our public highways
at will keep this part of our pub-

GETTING READY

Child-birth is full

Nature is not given proper assistance.
Mother’s Friend
is the best help you can use at this time.
It is a liniment, and when regularly ap
plied several months before baby comes,
it makes the advent easy and nearly pain
less. It relieves and prevents “ morning
richness,” relaxes the overstrained mus
cles, relieves the distended feeling, short
ens labor, makes recovery rapid and cer
tain without any dangerous after-effects.
Mother’s Friend is good for only one
purpose, viz.: to relieve motherhood of
danger and pain.

Philadelphia Record says:
United States treasury lias more

t—the reserve amounting to $145,-
But this prosperity affords no

that if the deficiency should cou-

t, however, might not prove ail
ard condition, as it would compel
iss to face the problem of provid-
souiid aud flexible currency system
which the treasury will be guard-
lin the plethora of gold on tlie one
ind a deficit on the other.”
Record should also have added
icre is no law whatever justifying
rve iu the treasury, thereby rob-
the current transactions of the
of that needed amount of money,
say that a reserve of $100,<XK),000 in
iu the United States treasury is uec-

to say that Jay Gould with his
ions upou millions of wealth in in-
»t bearing investments, should de-
it $100,000 iu the first national bank

it.
This reserve came about as an arbitr.i-
iuaugurution of John Sherman when
rotary of the treasury, with uo au-
hority of law whatever. It was
only doue in the interest of the
speculators in United States securities
and has been maintained simply as a
means of forcing, from time to time as
it might ^decrease from the amount
originally fixed, au increase in the issue
of government bonds. No higher evi
dence or better proof of the real purpose
of tliisgold reserve need be given, than
the arbitrary course pursued by President
Cleveland during the latter part of liis
administration in saddling upon this
country an additional interest bearing
debt of $2<>2,000,000, through the issue
of government bonds to support this
gold reserve in tlte treasury. This
“eudlest cliaiu” is still at work and so
long, nnder a gold standard, as green

at the U. S, Treasury and paid
