DISPENSARY AFFAIRS.
Original Package Hen and Their Work in
Carolina.
Columbia, S. O., Oct. 7.—The dispen
sary outlook at this end is very gloomy
and meinliers of the board of control are
wearing long faces tonight.
At the September meeting of the state
board of control it was confidently as
serted that the original jiaekage agen
cies, instead of hurting the dispensary,
would help it. To establish tlietruth of
this proposition, a comparative state
ment of the sales for August, 1896, and
181)7 was read, which showed that the
business done ill the mouth of the last
named year was several thousand dol
lars in excess of the same mouth the
previous year. From the showing thus
made the board felt confident of a large
fall trade and for September business
alone ordered 1,219 lmrrels of com and
rye whisky.
At the meeting of the board yesterday
another comparative statement of sales
was read. Il was for September, 1896
and l v '97. It showed a falling off of
in the receipts. Of the 1,210
barrels of whisky ordered for the Sep
tember trade, 730 remain on hand and
in transit. This marked decline in the
demand for dispensary goods has led
Colonel Jones to say in his report:
"As your next meeting will be on the
second day of the month, and in con
sideration of the large lot of liqnor still
on hand, 1 wish to amend my rtkpii si-
tiou for whisky by reducing the amount
asked for of corn to 400 barrels and the
amount of rye to fifty barrels.”
Several shortages were considered, the
most troublesome case lieiug that of Dls-
peuser Williamson, of Florence. He
was found short. His clerk made affi
davit that Williamson has been system
atically doctoring his liooks. The as
sistant attorney general, sent to investi
gate the robbery-, reported that if there
was any it wies made by the dispenser
himself. Williamson alleged a conspi
racy of his enemies to ruin him. He
was retained. Editor Crews, who was
formerly in charge of Cotton Plant, and
is now running a paper of his own, was
grunted a lieer privilege for the town of
Laurens.
The case of the State vs. Jesse J.
Whitehead, charged with assault with
intent to murder, will be tried in Clarke
Superior court this mouth.
The case was transferred several
weeks since from Oconee to Clarke
county by order of Judge N. L. Hutch
ins.
It became necessary to do this on ac
count of the venire of jurors in Oconee
county having been exhausted. This
case was tried five times in Oconee Su
perior court resulting in verdicts of
guilty, new trials and mistrials.
Now the jurors of Clarke county will
try their hands on this case and see
whether they can arrive at a verdict
that will stand.
This trial has cost the county of Oco
nee a considerable sum of money and
will continue to do so until it is disposed
of.
In 1891 E. G. Ware, an Oconee county
fanner, was shot from anilmsh and
came near dying from the effects of his
wounds. Ware says he recognized
Whitehead's voice just after the shot
was fin'd.
Whitehead was indicted for assault
with intent to murder and the ease is
now in its seventh year.
Whitehead is defended by Judge John
B. Estes, of Gainesville, and Judge B.
E. Thrasher, of Watkinsville.
The state is represented by Solicitor-
General O. H. Brand and Col. E. T.
Brown.
The Whitehead case will be tailed by
Judge Hutchins Monthly week.

TRUE BILL FOR BLODGETT.
Prominent Republican Indicted by Federal
Grand Jury.
Atlanta, Ga., Oct. 7.—Fraud, misre
presentation and felony is the charge
made against Tom Blodgett in a true
bill found against the lively republican
iu the United States court yesterday.
The sensational indictment fell with
surprising force among the members of
the republican party. Blodgett has been
one of the most active of his party in
Georgia.
The chargeagainst Blodgett is peculiar
and complicated. It accuses him of re
presenting ldmself to be the United
States internal revenae collector for the
collection district of Georgia, aud with
selling his promises to give men positions
in the revenue department.
The indictment alleges that Blodgett
secured $700 from one party and differ
ent amounts at different times from
other persons, and that in return he
promised the parties whom he was al
leged to be defrauding, to give them po
sitions as deputy collectors, collectors
and clerks.
There are just six counts in the in
dictment. All of the counts charge dif
ferent crimes, but all for the same gen
eral offense.
A few weeks ago the editor was taken
with a very severe cold that caused him
to be in a most miserable condition. It
was undoubtedly a bad case of la grippe
and recognizing it as dangerous he took
immediate steps to bring about a speedy
cure. From the advertisement of Cliam-
berlain’H Cough Remedy and the many
good recommendations included therein,
we concluded to make a first trial of the
medicine. To say that it was satis
factory iu its results, is patting it very
mildly, indeed. It acted like mngicand
the result was a speedy and permanent
cure. We have no hesitancy iu recom
mending this excellent Cough Remedy
to anyone afflicted with a cough or cold
in any form.—The Banner of Liberty,

Extraordinury Motion for New Trial
For Bud Brooks.
AN AFFIDAVIT SECURED.
Tato A fldavK Show- That Grady Reynolds
Talked Differently at the Trial and When He
Made Hie Laet Statement—Other Af
fidavits to be Secured.
The attorneys for Bud Brooks have
filed an extraordinary motion for a new
trial.
This motion will be heard by Judge
N. L. Hutchins in a few days, and if
overruled by him will go to the supreme
court, where a regular writ of error has
already been filed. .
The extraordinary motion for a new
trial is based upon the affidavit of Mr.
R. L. House, of Jefferson, and another
affidavit along the same line will be
secured.
Mr. House in his affidavit says that he
took down the last statement of Grady
Reynolds just before the hour set
for his execution. Reynolds said
that he struck the blow that
killed Hunt, and that Brooks simply
did the planning previous to the actual
killing, aud that Brooks was not present
when Hunt was killed.
This statement was quite different
from what Reynolds swore at the trial
of Brooks. He said then that Brooks
did the killing as well as the planning
of the crime.
On this ground the attorneys for
Brooks desire a new trial, as Brooks
denies any knowledge of the killing,
and admits only that he helped conceal
the body after the murder was commit
ted.
The Brooks case will be beard in
supreme court Nov. 1st.

Yesterday afternoon Mr. Joseph N.
Webb was placed on the commission
that manages the dispensary.
The term of Mr. C. W. Baldwin, who
had served as a dispensary commissioner
three years, had expired, and Mr. Bald
win was not desirous of re-election.
Under the law the two remaining
commissioners, Messrs. H. R. Palmer
and G. H. Hulme, named his successor.
They named Mr. Webb for the position.
The council Is required to approve or
reject the choice of the commissioners,
and yesterday afternoon ratified the se
lection of Mr. Webb as a commissioner.
The selection of Mr. Webb is a good
one, as he is one of the most prominent

IT WAS “TOO MUCH SMITH.”
Woodward-Warren Company at It* Bert Last
Night.
The Woodward-Warren company pro
duced “Too Much Smith” last night, the
house being comfortably filled.
Too Much Smith” is decidedly one
of the best farce comedies ever seen in
Athens, and it {was admirablely hand
led by this most excellent company.
The performance went with a vim
and there was not one dull moment dur
ing the evening. This organization
has many points of excelleuoe, not only
is it composed of talented ladies and
gentlemen, but the performances- are
given with au attention to detail, rarely
noticeable with popular priced attrac
tions.
There are even in this age of progress
some people who think that a high class
theatrical performance cannot be seen
today at a price less than was charged
during the war, but if those people will
pay a visit ” to the opera house during
the engagement of the Woodward-War
ren company they will be convinced
that these performances at 10,20 and
80 cents compare favorably with a large
percentage of the attractions charging a
dollar admission.
The matinee was not given yesterday
afteroon on account of the small crowd
present. The kid gloves were given
away as advertised, however, and the
money of each one present refunded.
Tonight a continuous Vaudeville per
formance will be’given, in which catchy
specialties will be introduced by every
'member of the company. The enter
tainment will open with a flawless
dramatic gem entitled “Hester’s Mys
tery” and close with a cake walk.

IMPEACHMENT CHARGES.
Savannah Council Hears Complaint Against
Fire Commissioners.
Savannah, Ga., Oct. 7.—The city
council heard the charges of impeach
ment against the members of the fire
commissions tonight, the committee of
which Alderman Wylly was chairman
having made a report.
The charges state that the members
of the commission, Messrs. W. L. Gray
son, George Parish aud R. S. Mell, are
incompetent and inefficient aud that
they are controlled by partisan political
influence.
The charges grew out of the fact, that
the commission waited and refused to
discharge Chief of Firemen John E.
Maguire after being directed to do so by
conncil. Maguire was vindicated by
the commission.
Thp commissioners were summoned
to appear before council Tuesday night
to answer, the impeachment charges.
Small precautions often prevent great
mischiefs. DeWitt’s Little Early Risers
are very small pills in size, but are most
effective in preventing the most serious
forms of liver and stomach troubles.
They cure constipation and headache
and regulate the bowels. Palmer &

Waco, Tex., Oct. 7.—This afternoon
W. C. Braun, editor of the Iconoclast,
was publicly beaten by Judge J. B. Scar
borough, George Scarborough and R. H.
Hamilton. The difficulty began in the
Provident building and was continued
for half a block on the street until Brann
fell in a heap on the street car track.
Brann was bleeding from a dozen sav
age cuts on the head and face. In less
than five minutes a thousand excited
persons had gathered on the scene and
there was every indication of trouble.
Six-shooters were iu evidence and for a
time it looked as if nothing could avert
a row, but the sheriff and his deputies
were on the scene and forced the crowd
back and restored order.
Braun’s assailants were arrested.
Judge Scarborough is a trustee of Bay-
lor.university and has a daughter in the
university. He says Braun’s recent at
tack iu his paper on the university is the
whole cause of the trouble this after
noon. Young Scarborough and Hamil
ton are students iu the institution and
say that Brann’s attack was beyond en
durance.
