SOME OLD SUPERSTITIONS.
Ths Broken Mirror, Old Shoo* and Rice, Walk*
log Under Ladder*, Etc.
Everybody knows that it is inexpedi
ent whenever yon happen to think of it
to walk under a ladder, to break a mir
ror, to stand under an open umbrella
indoors, to begin a journey on Friday
and a few score of similar beliefs whicn
have come down to ns from ancestors
more or lees barbarous. Bnt these same
ancestors of ours believed in a hundred
of such matters far everyone clinging to
their unworthy descendants, and some
of these long forgotten superstitions are
just as wide as necessary and os true as
any one of these others. Why, then,
should they he neglected ?
We ate content to-day to throw rice
at a newly married couple, or an old
shoe or twh, and the bride tosses her
bouquet among the girls to inform her
who is lucky enough ...to catch it that
she will be the next oBfe married. Bat
wheat is really the thing to throw,
because the evil spirits hate the color
ItliifjilLv
yellow above all thiugtr-if white grain
like rice is used it attrMts them and, to
become efficacious^jshoqld he colored
yellow with tormenc or some similar
dye. Ghosts and the things that bring
ill luck hate leather, so old shoes are
proper, except in those instances
when it was suggested that the
guests throw the carriage and
the couple drive away in the
shoe. But a shoe under yotqj pillow is
a radical cure for nightmare, and cramps
in bed can be averted by placing a slip
per upside down at the foot of the conch.
The use of trank straps, slippers, leather
whips and the like on small boys also
prevents the approach of new spirits of
vmischief and drives off the old ones. It
i^well for the bridegroom to bow garlic,
cloven and rosemary in his waistcoat be
fore the ceremony—no spirits gets de
praved enough, to stand that combina
tion. The route At wedding must be
arranged so that everything is'done as
the sun travels or as the hands of
watch go round; anciently there used tb
be a sacred fire about which the bride
and groom danced in tips manner.
Mirrors arc good things to have—if
they remain whole. It is always wise to
have a little one set in a ring, brooch or
bracelet. You know all evil things are
unable to withstand a sight of them
selves. If they catch the slightest
glance of their ugly visages they flee for
tlieir very existence. This makes a
barber .-.Imp a lucky place to have your
hair cut in, bnt the barber must be
particular to go to the top of a hill with
all his dippings and let them beTblown
away, else something undesirable may
tind the hair and work yon a mischief.
There are some barbers in Chicago who
are known to he careless about climbing
hills for this purpose. Holding a mirror
in front of a man when he is sleeping
will put a stop to any hail storm if per-

Pensacola, Fla., Oct. 13.—Hon. James
W. Jones, former United States senator
from Florida, died at Detroit this mom-

His remains wiU be brought here for
interment Friday.
Ex-Senator James W. Jones, of Flori-

Just before the close of his senatorial
term, Mr. Jones came to Detroit on

incarceration in the Deahom retreat.
An unreciprocated infatuation for a
Detroit lady is understood to have been
the prime cause of the senator’s mental
troubles.

A few days since Mr. E. R. Hodgson
while at his mills on the Northeastern

white toy in an old cotton car.
He pulled the boy out and saw before
him as typical a gamin as ever roved
upon the streets.
He became interested at once in the \
little fellow and took him home with
him.
He was a woful looking spectacle
when Mr. Hodgson tirst saw him. He
was only eleven years old, bnt was en
veloped in a pair of pants big enough for
a giant football player. He had on an
old pair of worn shoes, and a tattered
hat.
The same special tax that stopped the
dog show at the opera house last night
came near stopping the entertainment
of Signor Blitz tonight.
But when the tax was demanded of
Signor Blitz, he informed the authori
ties that liis show had other features
than pure magic, and could not he called
strictly a magician’s entertainment as

So he was not required to pay the

new shoes, etc., and emerged from this
refining process a bright-looking young
ster, his blue eyes dancing and his face
wreathed with smiles. It was the best
treatment he had had in many days.
Then he began to talk aud in a few
minutes it became apparent that he was
a regular encyclopaedia. He had been
tramping for over two years and was an
old hand in the business. He said he
had known many younger tramps, bnt
the youngest he ever saw was seven

Alabama Farmers Take a .Sensible View of the

Montgomery, Ala., Oct. 13.—A meet
ing of farmers of Dale and adjoining
counties was held at Ozark yesterday.
It was called by commissioner of Agri
culture Culver for the purpose of dis
cussing the cultivation of wheat and
cereals. Cheap cotton and a short crop
furnishes abundant evidence that the
farmers of the section were erring in
single-shotting cotton, and tho big as

Lectures at the State Normal School to be Pri
vate hereafter.
President Brad well, of the State Nor-
mal School, says that hereafter the Fri
day evening lectures at that institution
will be private and that no visitors will
be admitted.
He says he is forced to take this step
on account of the fact that the largest
hall at his disposal will not accommo
date the teachers in actual attendance
upon the school, thus rendering it im
passible for him to admit visitors ou ac
count of lack of accommodations.
President Bradwill says that occa
sionally he will have lectures at which
he will exclude a portion of the school
in order to accomodate visitors, and that
whenever such lectures are to bo held
he will give due notice through the pa
per.
He says that he regrets very much to
take this step as he is always glad to see
the citizens of Athens there, but that
the exigencies of the ease allow him no
alternative.

It all arose yesterday afternoon over
the punishment of Walter Rose, the 11-
year-old sou of Officer B. O. W. Rose,
by Prof. F. M. Harper, principal of
Washington Street School.
Out of that affair springs a charge I
against Prof. Harper lodged with the |
board of education by Officer Rose.
Officer Rose says he also iutouds car
rying the matter before the grand jury
re an indictment
if possible.
According to Mr. Rose’s statement
the affair was as follows:
His little boy was at school in Miss
Clyde Patman’s grade. A boy sitting
near by him called him a name usually
resented by all boys or men in a most
vigorous manner, afterwards breaking a
slate over his head. He said nothing,
but after school was dismissed the boy
again called him this name and they
clinched.
Mr. Rase says that Prof. Harper then
jerked his son away, hauled him up
stairs, and skinned liis legs along the
tainvay. He says that the boy has
scratches on his face, bruises under his
irm and on his legs, and a big knot on
his hip as the results of Prof. Harper’s
treatment. Mr. Rose says that he lias
witnesses to prove that Prof. Harper
choked his boy until his tongue came
out of his mouth, in the-face of the fact
that he was crippled several years since
md is not strong enough to lift any
weight whatever.
Mr. Rose said last night that he had
lodged a charge against Prof. Harper
with the board of education, and that
today Jhe would go before the grand jury
and seek to have an indictment return
ed against him.
Prof. Harper Gives Another Version.
Prof. Harper was seen last night in
regard to the affair, and gave liis side
of the occurrence.
Ho said that two boys had a fight in
the school yard and it becamo necessary
to order young Rose back into tho build
ing. He refused to go and Prof. Haraer
says he had to carry him back by force,
and that be used only such force as was
necessary to accomplish that purpose.
Prof. Harper says that the boy strug
gled and screamed a great deal while he
was carrying him into the room, but
that he did not choke liim, nor did he
attempt to do so.
He asked the boy’s teacher if liis
father objected to liis being whipped
and that she told him he did as he had
been crippled, and that then the boy
ran out of the room and went home.
Prof. Harper says that this morning
he will expel young Rose from school,
and that as far as any charges against
him either before the grand jury or the
board of education are concerned he has
nothing whatever to fear.
