Case Fail
Mrs. Atkinson*:
Agree.
(ilenville, Va., Oct. 14.—The jury in
t he famous ease of Mrs. Governor At
kinson. on trial for forging her former
husband’s name, disagreed today and
was discharged by the court. The jury
stood seven for acquittal and five for
eouvietiou. It is not believed that the
ease will Is- tried again. The arguments
and judge's charge were completed at
11 o'clock hist night. There had been a
continuous session of court since !»
o'clock yesterday morning excepting an
hour's intermission for meals.
Mrs. Atkinson had been on the stand
ten hours.
Her testimony was a general denial
of all the allegations charged in the in-
dirtments. She did not waver from the
statement on cross examination that all
the receipts in controversy given to
Owens were written at the dictation of
.1 edge Camden in his life time and that
they represejited ui^it they'show upon
their face.
She insisted that all the other pullers
and transactions relied ujmiii by tliestate
to show criminal intention were genu
ine and instituted at the dictation of
.1 edge Camden. She denied that she
had any interest whatever in the Owens
land, or tlint Owens had at any time
paid her money or any other thing of
value.

He was a regular glass eater.
A young darky astonished a crowd of
young men in front of the Imperial Cafe
yesterday by stating that lie could eat
glass with impunity. ,
The hoys agreed to give him a dime if
he would prove his words.
They secured a coca cola glass and
handed it to the negro who at. once be
gan to masticate it.
He would bite off large pieces ‘of the
glass, grind it to jsiwder, lietween liis
teeth, stick out his tongue with the
glass dust on it, and then swallowed it.
It did not take very long fur the darky
to devour the coca cola glass, and
strange to say he called for more.
He seemed to relish the article of fo<id,
and when another piece of glass was
handed him he made way with it in a
jiffy.
The glass did not cut the negro's
month in any way, and he never expe
rienced any bud results from the effects
of his meal.
A few weeks ago the editor was taken
with a very severe cold that caused him
to be in a most miserable condition. It
was undoubtedly a had case of la grippe
and recognizing it as dangerous lie took
immediate steps to bring about a speedy
cure. From the advertisement of Cham
berlain’s Cough Remedy and the many
good recommendations included therein,
we concluded to make a first trial of the
medicine. To say that it wa< satis
factory in its results, is putting it v^cy
mildly, indeed. It acted like magic and
the result was a speedy and permanent
cure. We have no hesitancy in recom
mending this excellent Cough Remedy
to anyone afflicted with a cough or cold
in any form.—The Banner of Liberty,

REYNOLDS GETS RESPITE.
Governor Atkinson Grants a Respite Until De
cember 3rd.
Atlanta, 6a, Oct. 14.—Governor At
kinson has granted another respite to
Grady Reynolds, the self-confessed mur
derer of merchant M. C. Hunt, of Jack-
sou county.
The respite was granted at the request
of Solicitor C. H. Brand, who asked the
‘ governor yesterday morning to give
Reynolds a longer lease on life. The
further respite was considered necessary
because of the fact that the case of Bud
Brooks, Reynolds’ partner in crime, will
not be reached before November.
The respite granted Reynolds at the
time that Brooks’s case went to the su
preme court was for -four weeks and
would have expired on October 22ud.
It would have been necessary then to
hang Reynolds or respite him. The re
spite granted yesterday is until Decem
ber 3d.

BIG JAIL DELIVERY.
A young lady in this city had a thrill
ing experience a few nights since while
visiting a friend who lives in a big house
out in a grove.
This young lady was assigned to an
upstairs room, and retired early. About
midnight she had an experience that she
will not soon forget.
She heard a creaking sonnd as if a
door opened on rusty hinges. Then the
room, which was dark, become bril
liantly illuminated as if by a supernat
ural light.
The young lady was terribly fright-
ned but could not scream. . She was
wide awake and in full possessiou of her
faculties, but had no power to scream.
Then an old woman, with bent form
and wrinkled face came into the sooiu
and stood at the foot of her bed.
The old wotmui placed her hands upon
the footboard and leaning over stared
into the face of the young lady. The
eyeballs were as of fire and the faci-
nating gaze rivited the attention of the
young lady upon the sepulchral visitor.
For more than half au hour this con
tinued and then suddenly the ghostly
visitor vanished and the room was in
darkness.
The young lady arose and soon a
lamp was burning. She was afraid to
go down stairs, through the dark hall
ways, and sat there until daylight.
When she informed her friend and
hostess of t he occurrence, au old duguer-
rotyjie was brought out of the family
album and banded to her.
There were the features of the ghost,
the features of an aunt of the lady who
lived at the big house np in the grove.

The city school sensation was talked
of a great deal yesterday.
There has already been a preliminary
investigation of the affair by Snpt.
Bond, and later on the hoard of educa
tion will investigate it.
Snpt. Bond says that from all the
information he can gather on the sub
ject the story of the young boy who
says Mr. Harper brutally mistreated
him, is not borne out by the facts.
From what Supt. Bond has gathered
it appears that Prof. Harper simply re
quired the young boy to go into the
building for fighting aud that when lie
refused to go, carried him in, not using
unnecessary force, and not choking
liim as claimed.
Prof. Harper lias nothing further to
say., in regard to the matter, simply
standing by liis statement at first made
to the Banner reporter. He is ready
to face any investigation of the affaii-
that may be instituted.
Officer Rose said yesterday that-he
had seen a number of- witnesses^who
substantiated his boy’s report of the af
fair and Allot he expected to push the
investigation both before the grand jury
aud the board of education.
Walter Rose, the young boy who was
punished, gave the following account of
the affair yesterday:
“My pencil dropped on. the floor iu
the hall and Jake Bernstein commenced
stamping it. I told him to stop aud he
cursed me and hit me over the'head
with a slate. .1 hit at him aud missed
him. When I marched in the recitation
room he hit me again and I hit him
back. He went and told our teacher,
Miss Clyde Putrnau. She told us both
to stay iu after gclioab
“At recess he hit me ogam and I hit
him and he ran aud told Mr. Harper.
Mr. Harper came and told me to stay
after school. I told him Miss Clyde had
already told me to stay in and I’d have
to see her.
“I started off aud Mr. Harper caught
me and jerked me back to him. He
caught me 1 y the arm and made the
print of his hands on my arm. He
dragged me on up the stairs aud com
menced choking me aud I commenced
crying aud he put his hand over my
moutlrso I couldn’t cry. This nearly
smothered me.
“He earned me into the hull and told
Miss Clyde to get the strap. He started
to whip me aud I told him papa didn’t
want me whipped as I was crippled.
He said he didn’t care, hut-when Miss
Clyde came back he asked her if it was
so and she told him a note to that effect
had been written. Then Mr. Harper
told her she \tould have to take me out
of school.”
The bill that calls for the creation of
Board of County Commissioners of
Roads and- Revenues for this county,
lias been drafted.
It will be introduced by Judge Thom

tively, their successors to be chosen by
succeeding grand juries.
The duties of this board of commis
sioners will be to look after roads, con
victs, public buildings, bridges, and
other county work, and to pay out .all
monies for snch work.
The pay for each commissioner is not
to exceed $3 per day for actual service,
aud the meetings are to be monthly.
The board is allowed to select a secre
tary.

THE EVENT OF THE SEASON.
Eugenie Blair and Her Own Company Will
Appear In the Clasric City.
Miss Blair lias scores of friends aud
admirers here who will be glad to learn
of her successful starring.tour and will
undoubtedly give her a hearty welcome
when she appears in our city. Eugenie
Blair is an unusually beautiful woman,
endowed with rare artistic talent and
fine dramatic ability. She understands
thoroughly the art of dressing, and her
superb costumes have always aroused
admiration. Possessed of more than
ordinary magnetism, Miss Blair seems
of late to have greatly advanced in the
art of deeply thrilling an audience with
out even a trace of effort that is apparent
upon the surface. \
She is particularly happy in the por
trayal of pathos, her rich voice and ex
pressive face doing admirable service.
The repertoire has been especially chosen
for the display of the qualities which go
to make the success of this clever ac
tress. “Camille,” “Jane Eyre,” “Mercy
Merrick” in “The New Magdalen,”
“Galatea,” “The Iron Master,” are all
within the easy range of Miss Blair’s
ability and are in themselves all popular
and standard dramas, and in their pro
duction every care has been taken to
render them as nearly perfect as possi
ble. Miss Blair’s artistic temperament
is too conscientious to permit anything
to be done badly and she has been very
careful in the selection of her company,
all of whom are trained and fitted for
the proper presentation of these plays.

THE COURT HOUSE PLAN*
Grand Jury Appointed a Committee

CITY COUNCIL ALSO ACTS.
The Committees WUI Thoroughly Discuss the

Definite Plan.
The proposition to have the county
aud city build a joint court honse and
city hall on the city lot on College Ave.,
and to use tfye present court honse as
a city school is now being widely des-
cussed.
Yesterday morning Editor Carlton, of
The Banner, went before the grand
jury aud outliued this proposition, at
the same tirno giving a number of
arguments iu its favor.
As a result the grand jury appointed
a committee to examine thoroughly into
the matter and make a report before the
adjournment of the present grand jury.
The City Council will furnish a com
mittee to dismiss with the grand jury
committee all the details of this ques
tion.
The committee from the grand jury con
sists of Messrs. A. H. Hodgson, T. P.
Vincent and W. A. McDowell. The
city committee consists of Messrs. J. F.
Rhodes, D. C.. Barrow and J. F. Foster.
It is probable that those two com
mittees will be able to put the matter in
definite shape, and that a report will be
filed with the grand jury of snch a.
nature as to authorize that body to con
sent to the transfer of properties aud
the proposed improvements.
The movement gains supporters every

The October “Alkahest,” published in
Atlanta, is indeed a credit to the South.
The articles are worthy of note from
cover to cover. The magazine is a gem
of the printer’s art and the cover design
is attractive. The sketches of A1 Lewis,'
