THE COUNTY CONVICTS.
The county commissioners of Clarke
county are rapidly arranging to take
charge of the county convicts, January
1st 1900.
They intend working these oonvicts
on the roads of Clarke county, and next
year will witness a great deal of per
manent road improvement and macada-
mizing.
In order to tak$ the convicts in band,
it will first be necessary to provide
stockade in which they may be safely
and comfortably housed. The oommis'
sion is now at work on this line
The main stockade will be built on
the county farm a few miles from
Athens'. It will be a building 20 by 110
feet, and will accommodate fifty con
victs. It wifi not be a luxurious home
by any means, bat it will be thoroughly
comfortable and every, precaution will
be taken to make it thoronghlysanitary.
The lumber for this new building is
now being-hauled to the farm, and the
work of construction will begin in a few
days. There will be small stockades
constructed in different sections of the
county for use by squads of convicts
when they work the roads in those dis
tricts.
The commissioners are certain that
good results will flow from this change
in the handling of the county convicts,
There are at present fifty-three county
convicts, bat that is a larger number
than usual. A stockade that will ac

the avowed determination of putting
the game of their lives, and should they
do this, there is a possible chance for
them, but, if on the other hand, they
are lax and careless, again will they
meet their Waterloo, as they did on a
former occasion that has not been for

The Georgia team, undeniably, is
strong and would have been the champ
ions of the sontb, bat for individual
playing instead of concerted action.
There are several members of the team
who will easily make the all southern
team, and this is evidence conclusive
that Georgia is sffcong.
The history of Georgia’s eleven in.
epitome is as follows:
They began the year with a heavy
debt hanging over them, and with bnt
slim hopes of securing a trainer. The
team practiced without any trainer for
some two weeks, and met the Olemson
eleven. This team they defeated by a
score of 12 to 0, thotigh Olemson proba
bly would have scored save for a fum
ble. This was a very creditable show
ing and all were ready and willing to
believe that Georgia had the greatest
team in the history of the institution.
The next game was with Sewanee,
and this was lost through sheer lack of
generalship. The score was 12 to 0,
when it should have been 0 to 0.
