Title to Ilcuuinoiit Oil Fields Is Sc
Far Defective.
Birmingham, Ala., Oct 0.—W. A.
Humphreys of Waco, Tex., tho leading
spirit in tho suit of the Humphreys cs-
tate, which is seeking to regain posses*
sion, under an old Mexican grant, ol
the famous Beafmiont oil fields property
from Lucas, McFadden and the other
capitalists, who now possess the prop'
erties, reached Birmingham yesterday
in search of Asbury Humphreys, one ol
the six original heirs.
Asbury Humphreys is known to have
receutly lived in Birmingham and is
the only one of tho 18 heirs who has not
been located and communicated with.
A proposition has been made by the
syndicates interested in the Texas oil
developments to compromise the Hum
phreys claim by the payment to each
of tho heirs of $20,000. No sort of effec
tive compromise can bo put through
without tho co-operation of all of the
heirs and bonce A. S. Humphreys* anxi
ety to find his distant relative. Dili
gent inquiry failed to disclose Asbury
Humphreys’ presence here and hi*
cousin has returned to Texas, leaving to
tho police the job of locating him.

Up In South Carolina.
Charleston, Oct. 5.—Since the death
of “Wild Bill,** otherwise known a«
William Johnson, the notorious despe

through the swamps and cornered in a
little hut by the river. He fought
viciously, but the posso closed in and he
was dually killed. When the negro was
put out of the way his band was de
moralized and no other leader has arisen
to lead the wild people to crime.
During the past week or two only a
few crimes have been reported and the
lawabiding people living near Red Top
are hoping that the quiet conditions will
