A SOUND POSITION
ON DIVORCE QUESTION.
The Protestant Episcopal chnrch of
America, whose general convention is
now in session in San Francisco, will In
all probability take a position on the
divorce question that will bring np
much comment and debate, bnt which
will be right, nevertheless.
The majority report of the committee
will recommend the adoption of a
canon, preventing a minister of the
ohnrch from solemnizing a marriage
between any two persons unless, or un
til by inquiry, he shall have satisfied
himself that neither person has been or
is the husband or the wife of any other
person then living.
The action taken by the "rlgorists
as those taking the extreme stand are
called, is based on the ground that the
chnrch is called npon to register its pro,
test against the laxity on the subject of
divorce that prevails In the United
States. As stated by one of the signers
of the report, “There seems no way in
which the chnrch can avoid complicity
in divorces of the most scandalous char
acter except in so far as it may refuse to
assume any color of responsibility for
any divorce by forbidding the clergy to
solemnize the marriage of divorced per
sons in any case whatever."
f fHE COlfAGE PLAN
For veterans' home-
U has bfebft fetiggeflted that it would-be
wise to tebuild the Confederate Veter*
an s’ Home on the cottage plan, and the
suggestion has met with mnoh favor.
It would undoubtedly make the place
more home-like. The old veterans would
not feel like they were housed in a big
asylum or a large hotel. There woald
be more genuine comradeship and more
pleasure for the old men under the cot
tage plan. And then, too, the danger
from lire would be reduced to a mini
mum.
The point has been raised that the
building should be so constructed as to
be of service for some state institution
after it ceases to be needed as a Veter
ans’ Home. We are opposed to such
reasoning. If the one large building be
the best for the velerans, let it be re
built, bnt if the cottage plan best suit
their pleasures and conveniences, let the
cottages be built. It is a question of
pleasing the old veterans, not one of
providing for future institutions. The
people of Georgia gave the money for
this Home for the sake of the veterans,
and their wishes in the matter should
be paramount.
PfiES. DAVIS FIR8T,
THEN M’KINLEY.
The Augusta Chronicle laments the
unseemly and untimely raising of sec
llonal issues over the new made monnd
of President McKinley by southern
men. It urges that the monument in
his honor be completed, and says-that it
should not interfere with, bnt should
insure the monument to Jefferson Davis.
The Athens Banner was the first pa
per to raise this issue, and is proud of it.
It is not a sectional lssne in the least.
It is simply one of duty. It is raised in
no feeling of bitterness, bnt one of re
gard for solemn obligations.
It is a sad commentary on the south
ern people that a monument to Jeffer
son Davis must be “insured” by the
erection of one to President McKinley
However great and good the latter may
have been, the southern people cannot
exense themselves of their neglect by
erecting a monument to his memory
while the other’s grnve in Hollywood
oemetery is nnmarked.
If to insist on the southern people first
performing their duty to their own dead
is to stir the fires of sectionalism, then it
is onr wish that they ever blaze
brightly.

A TEXAS WONDER.
Judge Hall, of Berkeley conoty, Cal.,
is a sworn enemy to hair dye. A com
paratively aged husband startled his
family by coming home with his mous
tache dyed a deep black.
After rallying the hnsband on the art
of coloration and denying the applica
tion for divorce, Judge Hall said:
“I am convinced that this family was
greatly scandalized by the fact that the
head of it dyed bis moustache. It
shows that he was carried away with
the idea of making himself yonng
again, which he hod no moral right to
do. His sons have testified that they
bad to listen to much ridicule on their
father's account. I believe that he is
responsible for his own tronbles and
that, if he would cease dying and allow

not he running after strange goddesses.
