When the reading of tlie Schley- Hodgson corre-p mdene© had been con cluded Captain Leinloy asked Mr. Hodgson whether his denial of the col loquy between himself and Commodore Ben lev had ever been published entire. Mr. Hougsou replied in the negative, laying time the last paragraph of his letter of denial had notT b.-eu printed. Tula paragraph referred to the enclos ure of a newspaper clipping. Mr. Raynor began his cross-examina tion by asking Mr. Hodgson whether the Marblehead bad hailed the Brook lyn when the two vessels passed each other as the Brooklyn was on her way to Cienfnegoa. The witness rep’ied in the negative. The examination then turned upon •vents alxtur Cienfargos and in reply to Mr. Raynor’s inquiry Hodgson detailed these at length. Saw Lights on Shore. Commander Hodgson said in reply to S nestiona that he had seen the lights ou ae shore at Cieufuegos, which were af terward determined to be signals, but he had supjiosed they were signals be- . tween different branches of tho Swinish forces on shore. Ho added that when Captain McCalla j arrived with Information as to the meauing of the signals lie was immedi ately disimtched to the shore to commu- cate with the insurgents. Mr. Raynor tneu naked: “How far were you off during tho blockade of Santiago, from tho Morro. during tne day and night of May ?S, 80, 81?” In response the witness Mini: • • Early in the day tune our habitual |N>sition was about 8 miles. In the night l think we steamed up and down in front of the harbor, a distance of about 8 miles.” He stated that the picket boats, the Marblehead aud tho Vixen, were inside the line of the fleet about midway be tween that line aud the shore lines. Iu this connection he said: ••The Brooklyn did all she could. She got into action just as soon as the first gun on’the port bow would bear and wo kept the port battery firing until she turned with port helm through the arc. using the aft guns until we got all the steamboat guns to bear. We got around as quickly as we could with port helm ttnttl wo almost paralleled tha course of the leading Spanish vessel, when the helm was eased and the ship steered a course parallel with the Viseaya, which wavtheu the leading vessel, although the Maria Teresa probably was farther to the westard than tho Viseaya. The three Spanish vessels we were then engaged with were the Viscava. the Colon aud the Oquendo. Witwer, a widow, rest ling u ibis city, was arrested by the polii* last night at the instigation of the coroner and is held a prisoner at Central t-tatiou pend ing an investigation which promises sensational result-. Mrs. Witwer is saspectcd of 14 mur ders, tho list including four husbands, five children, one s’.so r ami tour mom bers of different families In which she was employed as housekeeper. The la-t supposed victim was the si-ter, Mrs. Anna Pugh, who died a week auo unuer mysterious circumstances. In each Instance death was somewhat sudden aud aU were strangely ni’ko. iue prisoner is 47 years of age, and formerly lived in Middletown, this state. Nkw Yoke, Oct. 7. —Yeiju Naknjima, chief engineer of tho city of Tokyo, Japan, ami professor of engineering and mechanics iu the University of Tokyo, is in this country on a tour of inspection. Oct. 7.—What may turn out to be a murder mystery was discov ered today when tho body of a 8 year old boy was found iu a bag at 301 West Twenty-second street. Tho body was clothed only iu a pair of tight cotton drawers, but in tho bag with the body was a number of garments, which evi dently had belonged to tho lad. Except for a laceration on the boy’s abdomen there was no mark of violence ou the body. On the front of a cap found in the bag in gold lace is au emblem of a ship. Ou the side were the letters “IJ. S.” The ]K)lice believe the child was mur dered and that tlie body was being car ried to the river wheu it became too heavy, aud as in a number of similar cases, was deposited in the most conve nient place. An autopsy will bo per formed. The body was identified by Sydney Ryan, a cook of 300 West Twenty-first street, as that of his sou, Albert. Ryitn said tho last time he had seen the boy alive was yesterday at 4 o'clock, when he was playing on tho street in front of his home.. He said he knew of no rea son why his sou should have been killed, the family had no enemy. “I he White Slave Traffic." London, Oct. 7.—The Brussels cor respondent of The Times says that, though the congress ou “the white slave” traffic now assembled at Amster dam is due to private initiative, it ap pears that tbo matter will soon occupy the attention of tho European govern ments. The French delegate has stated that his government will shortly con voke an international conference to dis cuss means of coping with the evil. Previous advices lead to the belief that the court did start. The temi>orary palaces at Kat Feug Fu and Pao Ting Fu are being prepared like permanent dwellings, although they will be occupied only for a few days. The requisitions for the traveling ex penses already amount to 13,000,000 taels, in snire of the edict enjoining economy in this respect. Several local officials along the route have resigned, because they are unable to meet expenses of en tertaining the court.
