hall of tye Geneva rifles, who enjoys
the distinc ion of being the only minis
ter of the gospel who occupies an office
in the Alabama national guard other
than chaplain, has forwarded his resig
nation to Adjutant General Brandon.
He is pastor of the Baptist church here.
He finds his pastoral duties require all
of his attention. He is a military offi
cer.

Dickey, well known in Augusta aa a
stock and bond broker, has closed a deal
for three issues of redemption bonds of
the city of Augusta at 4 por cent to re
tire 7 per cent bonds aggregating $173,
000. Mr. Dickey also bought $25,OCKJ
city of Dublin, Ga., bonds bearing 5 per
cent, making an aggregate purchase ol
$198,000 m bonds.

road commissioner for a term of six
years, to succeed Chairman T. C. Cren

Columbus, Ga.. Oct. 16 — The first
frost of the season appeared yesterday.
There was a very noticeable frost in ex
posed places, and in some localities it
was rather heavy. Frost is ten days
earlier this year than usual.

The Athens Woman’s Club ib now
preparing for the entertainment of the
Georgia Federation of Women's Cluts,
which uioets here the first week in No
vember.
The program committee of the state,
of which Mrs. A O. Granger is chair
man, are at work on the official program
and as soon as it is received it will b(
published in foil.
The public is cordially invited to the
op-.uing ( xercisi s on Wednesday morn
ing, Nov. 6tb, and to all of the evening
exercises. The remaining morning and
afternoon sessions will he devoted to re
ports aud the business of the clob.
Those wishing to entertain delegate
will please send in their applications tc
Mrs H. O. White, the chairman of th<
homo committee. When delegates have
been assigned, each hostess is r quested
to write at once to her chosen guests and
ascertain the time of their arrival in the
city, in order to avoid confusion.
There will be a great number of visit
ing ladies outside of those regularly ap-
pointed as delegates. Some of theee
will be at private homes, others will
slop at the hotels. The chairmen of the

The trustees will hold a meeting on
the 22t>d for the purpose of perfecting

terday morning, were arrested here to
day by a posse of farmers. The
tette was surrounded, being found
asleep in Sidney Bell’s barn. Tney
were brought to jail hero by armed 111**11,

One of the men arrested threw away
a loaded 38 caliber revolver aud a coll
of dynamite fuse and some caps, all of
which was recovered. The men claim
to be tramps and tell a story of travels
which is known to be false. One of tne
men is a red-headed individual, who has
papers aud a Cleveland bricklayer’s
union card, all bearing the name of Wil
liam Fowles. He was much excited,

MORGAN SEES PRESIDENT.

Appointments.
Washington, Oct. 16.—Senator Mor
gan of Alabama, who was one of Presi
dent Roosevelt’s callers today, talked
with the president about the prospects
of the Nicaragua canal bill at the com
ing session of congress.
The president told Senator Morgan hs
would submit to the senate a new treaty
on the subject, which more nearly met
his views than the first Hay-Pauucefote
treaty, but he did not go iuto particu
lars. Speaking of the president’s policy
iu regard to southern appointments,
Senator Morgan said:
"It is the policy of reconciliation; the
policy of appointing the boat men tc
offices. ”
