The court was as usual, prompt in be
ginning the proceedings and the mem
bers of the court ami counsel were ap
parently in brighter and fresher frame
of mind than usual.
Afur the witnesses of former days
had been recalled for the purp< se of
correcting their testimony. Lieutenant

modore S *hley during tin* Cuban cam
paign, resumed the testimony which he
had began on Friday. After a few pre
liminaries, he began his narration of
the battle of July 3 and was th* n ques
tioned at some length by Mr. llavnor
before he was turned over to Captain
Leinley and Mr Hanna for cross exami
nation.
Ocher witnesses called for the day
were Mr. Edward Graham, the Associ
ated Press correspondent, who was with
Commodore Schley on the Brooklyn
from the beginning of the campaign at
Hampton Roads until its close: Li* men-
aut Edward Simpson, who served on the
Brooklyn, and Mr. Dennis J. Cronin.
Among the former witnesses recalled
was Captain Francis A. Cook, who re
turned to the stand for the purpose of
making an examination of his former
testimony regarding the boilers of the
Oregon.
C aptain Cook Recalled.
Captain Cook, who commanded the
Brooklyn during the Spanish war, was
the first witness of the day. He was re
called at his own request and made the
foil owing statement:
“In my testimony I stated that the
Oregon on the morning of July 3 was
under all boilers, having shiited her
boilers from forward to aft. I stan d
this from hearsay, and presumed it to
be correct, as accounting for her extra- |
ordinary speed. I find that she had not
shifted boilers that morning, but that
she had steam on all her boilers at all
times while iu the Santiago blockade.”
While Captain John L. Hannum was
' on the stand fur the purpose of correct-
iasr - r
the following questions:
“How soon after vou went on board
the Merrimac was she able to_ use her
own power to make from 5 to 7 knots;
••She was in condition to make 5
knots when I went on board. 1 did not
give her 7 knots.”
In reply to a question front Mr. Kny-
nor. the witness said it took from the
forenoon watch of May 27 until the
evening of May 28. working day and
night, to make tue repairs on the Mer-
rimac. He did not know how long tue
vessel had been totally disabled.
Lieutenant 1 bourns F. Carter, whit
correcting his previous testimony, stated
that he desired to change tnat portion
of his answer to a question by the court.
In which he had sal i that the two after ,
boilers of the Brooklyn had no water in |
them when the battle began on the
morning of July 8. As corre ted. ho |

BURGLARS LEAVE NO CLUE
They Dug a Tunnel From the Rear

Through the Bottom of the Steel
Stamp Vault.
Chicago, Oct. 21.—Burglars last night
stole $76,008 worth of stamps from the
Chicago postoffioo and escaped without
leaving the slightest clew.
A tunnel, which had taken a week or
more to complete, was run from the rear
of the building and a hole was then
drilled through the steel bottom of the
wholesale stamp vault. There were 97
•‘mall holes around the square plate cut
out and some of the drilling looked sev
eral days old.
The stamp vault was only six feet
away from the cashier’s vault, which
contained over $300,000 iu cash. Tho
atr. r evidently had been the objective
