ON PROHIBITION.
tT
'Ifon. J. M. Terrell in a speech at Can-
qton , Ga., bad the following to say on
the prohibition question :
In recognition of the right of the
people to make effective their wishes as
to the sale of intoxicating liquors, the
general assembly of Georgia in 1885 en
acted the present local option law. I
had the honor to be a member of that
legislature, Believing the measure to
be just, salutary and democratic in its
provisions, I gave it my support and
vote, the principle upon which this
legislation is based being the will of the
people as expressed at the ballot box.
Under its provision over one hundred!
counties have adopted prohibition,
entertain for this law the same respect
that I did when I supported it. At the
same time, 1 think the people have the
right, if it be their will, to go further
and prohibit the sale of whiskey within
the limits of the state. I can OOnceive
of no clromstances under whidh a gov
ernor could, consistently with his duty,
tgake any opposition by the use of the
veto power, or otimrwise, to the will of
fchejpeople, upon^jES question, asserting
itself. I certainly would not.

^'-SThe Albany (N. Y.) Times takes a
very hopeful view of the outlook for
the success of the democratic party. It
says: "Straws show which way the
wind blows, and Blowly but surely the
democratic party is approaching entire
unityj The signs of the times multiply,
and while the republican newspapers
endeavor to make a mountain of fac
tionalism ont of each mole hill of dif
ference within the democratic ranks,
their actions are those of desperation for
the prophet has read the writing on the
wall.’

SUMMER AMUSEMENTS.
The raging heat of summer will soon
be upon us and the time is near at hand
when our tired business people will need
some recreation. The majority of these
cannot get out of town for a few days to
enjoy the cool mountain breezes or the
quiet shade of the country farm house,
and it is right that some place be pro
vided for them here.
The park should in some way bo pre
pared os a place of amusement where
the children and mothers and tired
clerks and business men could go and
^pend a pleasant honr away from the
heat and other places in the city.
The old schntes conld be fixed np for
a nominal sum and it is well known
what a source of innocent amusement
and pleasure this afforded oar people a
few years ago. Then again a stage ooald
be erected in the pavilllon and vande-
Title pnt on at intervals.
Any thing to make the piaoe attractive
would draw hundreds to it and would
be^a pnbjjj benefit, It is practically
he only piaoe in the oity for each pur
