ADMIRAL SAMPSON.
There Is a touch of pathos connected
with the death of Admiral Sampson that
will appeal to the people of the United
Stales with much force. The news of
the death of the Admiral no doubt
brought tears to the eyes of many who
were not his friends in the unfortunate
controversy that arose as to which of
two gallant naval lighters was entitled
to the glorious victory off Santiago liar
bor during the Spanish-American war.
Admiral Sampson has always had the
reputation of being a man with a kind
heart; kind to the members of his family
and kind to his fellows ; a good hnsband
and a splendid father. These are char
acterlstlcs that speak well for the de
parted. They are not possessed by every
man who is popular with the masses,
and now and then we find such a man
who is, with the masses, unpopular
Admiral Sampson’s attitude in the long
and tiresome controversy following the
victory of Santiago, to which we have
referred, stamps him as a man of even
temperment, and he will stand out in
history as a well balanced man, what
ever else may be said of him.
It may not be in the best of taste to
discuss the controversy that has so long
existed between the friends of Admiral
Sampson and those of Admiral Schley,
in connection with the death of the
former, but this will be necessary, to au
extent, in order to bring out some good
points in the career of Admiral Samp
son. The Banner, with a very large
ma.iority of the American people, has
always believed that to Admiral Schley
was due the honor for the victory at
Santiago, but the Banner has also be
lieved that the long and bitter fight that
has been made on Admiral Schley has
not been the fault of Admiral Sampson,
but the fault of a number of the mis
guided and over-zealous friends of that
gentleman. The Admiral who has just
departed from amoug us has had but
very little to say about the matter. Be
fore he knew it, a number of his friends
had claimed for him a victory to which
the American people did not think he
was entitled. Not a few of those friends
were attaches of the Navy department
of our great government, and these have,
in our opinion, done more to widen the
breech between the man who said ‘ ‘there
is glory enough for all” and the man

combined. When Admiral Sampson
faced this condition, if he had stood npin
the midst of il all and said that his friends
were wronging his fellow-officer in
trying to add a laurel to bis crown which
he did not deserve, he wonld have died
the most universally loved man in the
United States. The popularity of Ad
miral Schley would have faded into in
significance in the light of the popular
approval of Admiral Sampson's course,
and of the two, Admiral Sampson would
have gone down in history as the great-
er man. Bat no donbt Admiral Samp
hou reasoned that he could not afford to
do this, which would have put his life
long friends in an embarrassing posi
tion and of the two courses, he chose
to be loynl to the friendships that had
been formed in days long since passed.
He did this, but he left withjhis friends
the burden to prove that he, and not
Admiral Schley, was the hero of San
tlago. These friends had the machinery
in hand, and officially the proof was
soon forthcoming. The controversy
was closed with Admiral Sampson the
official hero of the occasion, and Admi
ral Schley the hero in the hearts of the
American people.
We reoite these things to show that
Admiral Sampson was not a bad man,
but on the other hand a man who has
suffered at the hands of his friends. A
man w.iose untimely end has no doubt
been hastened by the bitter controversy
which has stirred the hearts of the
American people as they have never be
fore been stirred about such a matter.
A man who was loyal to friendships and
who was kind to his family, and no
doubt a man who was true to every
trust imposed in him by the navy de
partment, to which he devoted the best
years of his life. A man who has drank
his full share from the cup of sorrow,
and a man whose death will canse a
pang in many, an American heart
