edios reef near Acajutlun. on the morn
ing of April 2. When the steamer
struck the reef Captain Pitt and the
crew, fearing that she would sink,
launched tho boat and rowed ashore.
No one was left on heard the vessel.
Captain Pitt made his way to Arajut-
la and notified the underwriters of the
loss of the vessel.

Soufriere Volcano, on St. Vincent Is
land, in Disturbed State.
London, May 10.—The following ca
blegram watt received this morning at
the colonial office from Governor Sir
Frederick Mitchell Hodgson, of Bar-
badoes:
“The Soufriere volcano, on St. Vin
cent island, erupted violently yester
day. Loud reports, resembling artil
lery lire, were heard at llarhadoes at
3 o’clock in the afternoon. At 5 o’clock
there came darkness and thunder, ac
companied by a strong downpour of
dust, which continued until night. Har-
badoes is covered several inches deep
with dust this morning. Have tele
graphed Sir Robert B. Llewellyn, gov
ernor of the Windward islands, offer
ing him all assistance.”
Another cablegram received from
Administrator Bell, of the Island of
Dominica, says:
"A terrible eruption has occurred of
a volcano at Martinique. Groat dls
tress prevails there. I am sending pro
visions immediately. All safe at Do
minica.”

Lisbon, May 10.—A dispatch receiv
ed here from Delagoa bay, Portuguese
East Africa, says that peace in South
Africa is certain to result from the
conference of the Boers to bo held at
Verenniging. Transvaal, May 15. It is
said, the dispatch continues, that
peace will be officially proclaimed May

British terms the Boer leaders were to
meet at Verenniging and reach a final

When Volcano Erupted.
Paris, May lo.- The minister of ma
rine has received the billowing un
dated dispatch from Pinte-a-f’ltre. Is
land of Guadelupe, from the command
er of the French cruiser Suchet:
“I have obtained the following In
formation of the events yesterday:
"About 8 o’clock the volcano threw
up a considerable mass of smoko and
earth. A whirlwind of fire immediate
ly followed. Instantly the whole town
of St. Pierre was in llames and the
ships in the harbor were dismantled
and burned. The shower of rocks
lasted a quarter of an hour. I arrived
at St. Pierre at 2 o’clock in the after
noon, saving fvw persons from the
ships. I saw no living creature in St.
Pierre, to which it was impossible to
penetrate. There wero numerous
corpse's near the quay.”

San Antonio, Tex., May 10.— Gustav
Toudouze, one of the most prominent
naturalists in the south, died at his
home in Losoya, this county, at th*
age of 81 years. He was horn in Noy
out. France, April 24, 1810, earn* to th<

had lived nearly that long In this

to the navy department tho arrival of
that ship at San Domingo this morn
ing. It is possible that If tho political
situation on the island warrants it the
ship will be sent over to Martinique to
afford aid to the survivors of the catas
trophe.

French cabinet this morning the minis
ter of finance, M. Caalllaiux, was au
torized to expend all the money neces
sary to succor the sufferers by the
Martinique disaster. An official of the
lonial office sailed from Brest for

Vinita. I. T.. May 10.—John P. Dunn
the alleged murderer of Sheriff Pow
ers, of Clarksville, Ark., is reported
located in Oklahoma and a force of
deputy marshals, accompanied by the
sheriff, King, of Clarksville, has left
here to attempt his capture. Dunn is
reported closely guarded by friends
and a fight Is anticipated beforo he is

with this city. Four or five large
houses (allied on a business of at
least 1500,060 annually. One of these
houses, it is known, had $100,000 ac
lualty invested In and about St. Pierre

London, May 10.—A company has
received a message from Martinique
today saying the volcanic eruption
there continues and that ships are
afraid to approach the Island.

Thinks Her Family Perished.
Stockton. Cal.. May 10.—Mme. Lou
se l.uit, a teacher of French in this

the terrible disaster at St. Pierre, Mar
tinique. as her family resided in that
ity. Her sister. Mme. Gentile; her
husband, two sons. George and Raoul,
anil two daughters, Alice and Anna,
• believed to have been killed. Raoul

brilliant lawyers and orators on the
island and lias held many prominent
positions of trust. For the past two

Trolley Strikes Newspaper Man.
Louisville. Ky., May 10.—Walter N.
Haldciuan. the venerable president of
the Ixmisville Courier-Journal compa
ny and one of the best known news
paper men in the country, was struck
by a trolley c ar at Fourth and Y’ork
streets this morning while attempting
to cross the tracks and was seriously
injured. He received n severe scalp
wound and his shoulder was sprained.
Mr. llaldeman Is over 80 years old and
while (he injuries in themselves aro
not necessarily dangerous, some un
easiness Is felt on account of his ad
vanced age.
