The Savannah Press is one of the best
afternoon newspapers in the state and
it is popular with Savannah people.

One of the certainties of politics this
year is that Hon. John T. Boifueillet, of
Macon will be clerk cf the House of
Representatives the coming term, and as
many more as he desires,
The death of Paul Ford removes one
of the brightest minds from American
literature. His "Peter Sterling” will go
down in history as one of the greatest
works of the present time.
The resignation of Henry Olay Evai s
from the position of Commissioner of
Pensions for the United States, and his
sibsecjueut appointment aB Oonsnl-Gen
eial to London furnish a lesson worthy
of emulation by every yoang man in the
country who has a desire to enter politics.
Five years ago, when Mr. Kvans was
placed in charge of the Pension Bureau,
he found the affairs of that office in
very bad shape, whether due to the
faults of his predecessor or not. He
found many irregularities, and at onoe
realized that he would havo his hands
full to get matters straight. With great
determination he set about to undo
much that had been done, and to see
that the office, as long as it was under
iiis control, was inducted in a straight
forward and determined manner. For
five years Mr. Kvans has withstood
many efforts on the part of peanut poli
ticians and others without integrity, to
collect money from the pension depart
ment when it was not merited or just.
A large pack of patent shark hounds
was on his track before he had become
familiar with the workings of the office,
Oat all of these he held off nntil he was
familiar with affairs, and then gave
them the cold shonlder. He asserted
his manhood and his character by refus
ing to pay out of his department a single
dollar to which the applicant was not
entitled. He was in every sense the
power behind the throne in the pension
bureau and at all times refused to allow
others to take hold of and conduct his
affairs. He left the service a few weeks
ago with a reoord behind him such as no
other mauever made in this department,
and the first opening recognized as a
promotion, was promptly tendered to
Mr. Kvans by the President, showing
that Mr. Roosevelt appreoates Bnch ser
vice along with the other people of the
United States.
As the Banner said a few days ago,
the appointment of Mr. Kvans as Consul-
General to London which is a much
better place from every etamdpoiut, will
not afford much encouragement for Mr.
Ware, the new pension commissioner,
to depart from the ways of Mr. Kvans in
the coaduct of the Pension bureau

Of all the Georgia days at the Char

the greatest. The people of that pro

The Macon Telegraph devoted an en
tire column to the speech delivered by
Mr. Gnerry in Macon Friday night. It
will likely require two columns to carry
the corrections Mr. Gnerry will want
made.
The Washington Post says that “the
dropping ont of Mr. McLanrin will not
make such a hole in the South Carolina
situation, bat it will doabtless make a
draft upon the administration's pie

The
Senator McLaurin again displayed his

however, so the world will not likely be
worried with an explanation of the bout.
There are fonr candidates for three
plaoes in the legislative race in Bibb
oonnty. It Is generally conceded that
Hon. L. J. Kilbnrn, will be one of the
locky ones. He is the candidate of the
laboring people of the oonnty, and is
quite popular with all classes.
The Scepter.
was the emblem of pow
er. As the sliver wand, so familiar in
cathedrals, was once hollow, containing
the “virgo” or rod with which chastise
ment was in flirted upon the choristers
and younger members of the founda
tion, so the royal scepter represented
the right to inflict punishment Hence
the expression “to sway the scepter”
implied the holding of regal dignity.
Tiie scepter with the dove possessed tho
additional signification of the Holy
Ghost, as controlling the actions of the
sovereign. The same idea was con
veyed at Heims by the beautifu cere
mony of letting loose n number of
doves at the coronation of the French
kings.—Good Words.

The members of the state prison com
mission say that the insinuations of Mr.
Gnerty to the effect that the prison com

seems that Mr. Gnerry gets himself in
trouble every time he writes a card.
