Editor Banner:—Von rrqmst me to I
writo you something concertin g an in-'
sect known as the seventeen year locuit |
that has appeared within the last few !
days in great numbers in Northeast I Th.
Georgia, extending from Habers! am ; p t:y
oounty along the -Chattahoochee and!of ti:
Savannah near to A'lan'a. j mere.
This insect, although generally termed j Ti;
a locust, is not a loenst. bat of a diSEe. > wilt 1
ent order of insect. jia-h
p is a cicada of the order II. miptera I n ■
sub order Ifomoptera. The elyttc-t 01 j x
wing coverts are transparent and vein: d if:
The noise they produce is made by a ! i.ri .
complicated musical aparatas on ill I
underside of tho abdom. u lie life his ,
tory is as follows ; j , „
At a fixed period of siv.-nteen yi an-■
this insect emerges from the earth in a j
pnpa stage, soon fix- s its sharp claws in
some substance as the bark or leaf (f a
tree and soon bursts its shell ai d
emerge! the perf.ct iuseot. After a
short flight to perfect its wings it a’
once seekB a mato for the propagation f
its epcoies. That seems to bo its m n
purpose for emerging into the ,mishit o
The female at once deposits her eggs in j 0 f the ow mis to 1
the tender twigs of trees. The bark is I afion by August 1
split and the twigs are thus ingraved so J
that they die and within a year or so J
fall from the tree,
There are two suppositions as to the
manner in which the larva from these
eggs reach the earth. One is by way ol
the sap of the tree; the other from de-
oay of the twig falling to the earth.
This larva remains a grab deep in the
earth for seventeen years. Whon the
cycle of its existence is comp’eto, it
emerges from its long confinement The
adolescent stage of this insect is longer
than that of any known with possib'y
one exception.
The perfect insect eats notbiug, bat
seems to retnrn to snnshine to propogate
Its species that it proceeds to do without
delay.
I have just returned from Habersham
county, where this cidada has appeared
in great numbers, in some localities
more than others. The woods resounded
with their notes along the line of the
Southern railroad from Mt Airy to
Lnla. The larger insectivorous birds
were destroying a great number of
them. Ohiokenswere having a contin
ual feast. I saw two snakes that seemed
to he filled to repletion with them.
The parent insect dies after a lifo of
about twenty days. They will surely be
, .vhioh i :u;s
years, bin B.:

Here’s an odd claim
as the “true system
of refrigeration:”
“The air passes over the ice,
under the ice and around the ice,
depositing thereon any and all im
purities gathered from the pro
vision chamber.
Well, who on eaith wants
his food cooled by air that
comes from an ice chamber
made foul by odors from
highly scented articles in the
provision chamber?
That’s juit what spoils so
much milk and butter ; just
why your old-style refrigera

Refrigerators
you may keep fish, pine
apples cheese, melons, etc.,
in the same chamber with
uncovered dishes ot butter
and milk—simply because
“any and all impurities gath

the ice !
All foul odors carried out
of the provision chamber
without coming in contact
with the ice.
“Cheaper" refrigerators
offer no such protection, and
their lesser cost would be
more than counter-balanced
in one season by the foods
they’d taint.
