•‘The editor of Manila freedom,” say-
the Washington Post, "may have t<
change the name of his paper in ordei
to keep ont of jail.”
The Aognsta Herald says informatior
comes from two reliable sonrees tha:
Fleming and Hardwick will both carry
Washington county,
Mr Charles G Edwards, ot Savan
nab, has taken the stamp for fonr can
dictates: Terrell, Stevens. Eason and
Merritt. He has a winning ticket all
tho way through.
The Macon Telegraph has contributed
a well written editorial to the subject of
lobbyism, in which it takes the position
that representatives shonld be expected
to listen to appeals from constituents.
This is the way Mrs. Myriok looks at
it. The gubernatorial wrangle will
settled in just twenty days. And the
people of Georgia will repudiate the
mndslinging against Joe Terrell by
electing him governor.
The withdrawal of Rev. A. J. Bo:k
from the race for state echool commis
doner leaves that contest a three cor
acred affair. Those now in the race are
Hon. W. B. Merritt, county school com
missioner of Lowndes oonnty; Hon
Mark Johnson, of Baldwin county, and
Hon. G. R Glenn, the present state
sohool commissioner. Mr. Glenn has
held the office for several terms, and
while there are many charges against
his official record, he has made a good
official.
It was generaJly conceded that Mr
Beck, who has withdrawn, had a good
chance of being nominated. He has
□umber of strung friends iu Clarke
county, as he has in every county in the
state, and these are doing »ffecth
work for him But in tho interest
harmony, Mr Beck has withdrawn, aud^
in withdrawing he has taken occasion
to endorse Mr Merritt for the position.
In the course of hisletterof withdrawal,
Mr. Bfcic says :
In the interest of harmony and
union airo: g those who desire a practi
cal and i ft-c ive public school system, 1
beg to withdraw my name from farther
consideration a-: a candidate for the of
fice of state school commissioner.
"In this cour.ec tion I wish to Bay that
I feel that the i lection of Professor W
B. Merritt, r.ov. echool commissioner of
Lowndes county, will bo for the best in
terests of the schools of Georgia. Hit
long and successful experience in public
soool work and his full sympathy witl
the needs of onr common school con-
vine, ma that it is my duty 'o give him
my hearty and cordial support. I trust
that '.hose friends throughout the state
who have assured me of their lnteresl
and help will give to Professor Merritt
the Fame earnest and hearty support
for the office of state school commis
sioner that they have given me."
This action on the part of Mr. Beck
will make thousands of votes for Mr
Merritt, and the Banner hopes it will
lusnre his nomination, for he is nnques
tionably one of the ablest educators in
the state. He would make an ideal 6tat<
school commissioner.
