Knights From St. Elmo
Lodge Leave for Con
vention.
The Memorial exercises of St Elmo
Lodge. Knights of Pythias, were held
in the opera house Sunday afternoon at
fire o’clock and were largely attondod
The Knights marched to the opera
house in a body aud the officers of the
lodge were seated npou the stage.
The exercises began with the singing
of America by the audience, after which
short memorials wore read by the ofli
cers.
The address of tho afternoon was then
made by Rev. Joel T. Daves, who spoke
most eloquent and fittingly of the mem
ory of the dead and beloved Knights, of
what an inspiration thoir lives shonld be
ts the living Knights, of what a sweet
occasion these Memorial exercises coold
be made where lovo and veneration for
true principles were made apparent.
The Knights, after the address, in
company with a del-gation of Masons
who were present, marched to the ceme
tery where the exercises of decorating
the graves were most beautiful aud im
pressively conducted.

Ou the coffee question a lady says
used to he so miserable after breakfast
that I did not khow how to get through
the day. Life was a harden to me
when I tried to sleep I was miserable
by having horrible dreams followed by
hours of wakefnlness. Gas wonld rise

COTTON LETTER.
New York, May 10.—In the cotton
this a. in., interest centered ou the news
from Texas, indenting a big storm in the
sonth-west section, and, as a result,
prioes moved np a little. Horae private
reports claim serions injury to growing
cotton, bnt the general trade disregard
ed these reports. Tge fact that the
market in Liverpool was closed today,
restricted basiness and the feeling was
nervous and unsettled. There was
plenty of rain at Ft. Smith, Memphis,
Oklahoma, Vicksburg and Little Hock
Some were olaiming to much rain at
these places and some were olaiming too
1 ttle. Reoeipts were running moderate
ly. about 4,000 for the ports vs. 11,000
last year.
There was more or less talk of poor
dry goods trade. The main thing
against aotivity was the holiday at Liver
pool, and without advices from there
people hore wore at sea, bnt neverthe
less, renewed disposition was shown to
liquidate as the morning advanced, and
at the same time, it waa said that there
was no danger of the market being be
long as over sold as it has been previous
ly over bonght.
A heavy estimate for Houston tomor
row intensified the lower tendency
shown at times and the absenoe of fa
vorable news of crop inquiry in Texas
kept the trade in snspence and the ma
jority were inclined to take the short
side one block of ten thousand. July
sold at S.71 today. Eew York advanced
sharply before noon on reports from
New Orleans where Ball leaders were
aotive.
