• The three Judges named below shall decide unde
the conditions of the contest who are the winners of the
prizes offered, and they will render their decision in
• writing. This decision so made shall be final and bind
ingupon all parties to the contest; and the prize money
will be paid out on the order ol these Judges to the win
ners as so determined by them. These Judges will
certify the official count to be made by Mr. Colburn.

Certain Executive Parted With $7,500
at Charleston.
Charleston, S. J , Aug 13.—Some of
the visitors to the Charleston Cxposl-
tion who lost money In a crooked gam
bling house here which was subse
quently broken up by the police will

was summoned to Virginia to appear
as a witness In a civil suit against
Charles Harper. Harper claimed to
have lost heavily In Charleston and
Manlgault was asked to bear witness
to this effect. According to the test
imony Harper dropped $4,500 against
sundry games which flourished In
Charleston during the exposition pe
riod.
Perhaps the most sensational state
ment in kTanlgault's testimony was
that a governor of a certain state lost
$7,500 In cold cash In one night’s high
play at Charleston. This testimony
was given under oath, and white ex
parte In the Harper suit. It went to
show that all manner of high-rolling
marked the sporting end of Chariai.

Strange Disease Has Decimated Fam
ily In New York City.
New York, Aug. 13.—A mysterious
aliment, supposed by physicians to
be duo to noxious gases from a big
excavation for a sewer, has decimated
the family of Professor Edward E.
Howe, who came here with his wife
and three children from their home
in Hazelton, Pa . four woks ago to
spend the summer vacation with rela
tives The three children are dead,
and Mrs. Hoove is 111 of the same side-
ne«a which killed them.
July 15 Alice, aged 2 years, the
youngest child In the Howe family,
wag taken 111. Her ailment seemed
to bo an aeute combination of dysen
tery and malaria. The child died
July 2d
Two day* lator Dorothy, the eldest
child, who was 10 years old, was etrick
en with the same ailment. Two days
later the only son, Cyril. 8 years old,
was stricken. Thursday last little
Dorothy died, and now Cyril Is dead
and Mrs. Howe very ill.

Carolina Meets.
Greensboro. N. C., Aug. 13.—The
Master Printers’ Association of North
Carolina, an oganlzatlon for improve
ment of the printing cralt, lias its first
annual meeting here.
A constitution and by-laws were
adopted, and the following officers
were elected: C. H. Edwards, of
Raleigh, president; Osmond L. B. Bar
ringer, of Charlotte, first vice presi
dent; George L. llacknej, of Asheville,
second vice president; Joseph J. Stone,
of Greensboro, secreary and treasurer;
II. B. Varner, of Lexington; J. M.
Reece, Greensboro;R. B. Elam, of Char
lotte, executive committee; H. E. Shoe,
man. of Durham, and 11. A. Murrlll,
of Charlotte, board of estimates.

Two Thousand People in Attendance
at Charlotte.
Charlotte, N. C„ Aug. 13.—Two thou
sand people from all pqrts of the coun
try attended the big reunion of con-
fedemte veterans at Providence
church yesterday.
The feature of the occasion was an
address by Dr. Henry Louis Smith,
of Davidson college, who spoke for
two hours on "Education.” At noon
a feast was spread, with covers for
i,0i>0, to which the veterans did am
ple Justice. The affair closed with a
tournament and a coronation hall.
