THE JUDGES.
The three Judges named below shall decide unde
the conditions of the contest who are the winners of the
prizes offered, and they will render their decision in
• writing. This decision so made shall be final and bind
ing upon all parties to the contest; and the prize money
will be paid out on the order ot those Judges to the win
ners as so determined by them. These Judges will
certify the official count to be made by Mr. Colburn.

PREPARING FOR A STRIKE.
Street Car Men In Chicago May Stop
Their Wcrk.
Chicago, Aug. 14.—Sotr.h side street
<ar men took further steps last night
to prepare for a strike in the event
of failure to bring about an amicable
adjustment of their differences with
the company by the end of the week.
At a special meeting of the men tho
executive board of the union waa in
structed to submit all grievances, with
col roborative evidence, to the execu
tive board of the Chicago Federation
of Labor at a Joint conference to he
held on Saturday.
The employes of the nerth and west
side lines will take similar action at
a meeting to be held tonight.

be held this afternoon between a com
initteo of union street car men and
the directors of the Union Traction
company, is said to depend in a large
measure whether or not a strike will
be railed on the lines under its juris
diction. The men will s.sk for a def
inite arrangement with the company
and for an increase in wages.

MRS. DEACON DENIES STORY.
Nothing In Alleged Betrothal of Crown
Prince and Her Daughter.
Paris, Aug. H.—The Matin, which
has been publishing the story of an
alleged secret betrothal between the
Crown Prince Frederick William ol
Germany and Miss Gladys Deacon, tha
daughter of Mrs. Parker Deacon, to
day ceased publication of the story
In consequence of a letter from Mrs.
Deacon as follows:

MAGAZINE writer suicides.
Despondent Because Many Manu
scripts Had Been Returned.
Now York, Aug. 14.—Napoleon F.
Washington, a magazine writer, has
committed suicide hy hanging himself
by a cord to a hook on the transom
of tho door of his room. He had
been ill with nervous prostration tot
some time. He was 44 years of age.
Coroner Goldenkranz Said that he
believed the man was despondent be
cause many manuscripts had been re
turned to him. It was said also that
he was In financial difficulties. In the
pockets of his nightgown was an emp
ty vial. Pasted to the side of tha
bottle was a piece of paper on which
the man had written: "Laudanum.

Traverses Large Extent of Territory
In the Transvaal.
Johannesburg. Aug. 14.—Considera
ble excitement has been created here
by the discovery of a new gold reef,
which Is said to traverse a large extent
of territory.
Local geologists think the strike is
a continuation of the Wttwatorstrnnd
main series, hut the discoverers de
clare that they have found now gold
fields that will be the equal In size
of the Wltwaterstraud.
