Proposition to Build a $50,000 City Hail Accepted by Council and Election Called For September 25th? Much Discussion About the New Street to Sandy Creek Road—Matter Unsettled. MONDAY THE LAST DAY. The meeting of tho connoil yosterday ing (30,000 for the building, but sinoe morning was a hummer. The city hall went through like a flash With bat two dissenting rotes and a bond election called for Sept. 25th. In disenssing the motion to pass the ordinance warranting the election, many members of the connoil gave expression to their views. Judge Foster said : "I am greatly in favor of having a new city hall, but from discussions with a number of citi Zens, 1 believe that the finances of the city do not warrant the issnance of bonds at this time. At any rate I think the finance committee should look into the matter of the city's finances care folly and render a statement of their oondition before any father notion was Alderman A. H. Hodgson said: "I have had many talks with the business men of Athens concerning the new oity hall and I have not heard a single dis senting opinion. This is a growing oity and the Interest on the bond issue will not be over $3,000, and there will be no trouble in providing for that amount. Let os test the sentiment of the people and give them the privilege of saying whether we shall have the new oity hall or not. Alderman Weatherford expressed himself as thinking that $30,000 was enough to build the new hall. Alderman O’FarTell said: "At first I was In favor of appropriat- you have appointed a committee to look into the matter and they have carefully investigated all the existing needs and conditions. I shall not oppose the amount recommended. As in the case of building the water works, we should look toward tho future. I do not think the debt is too great, and with good financial work we can easily meet all obligations." A vote was then taken and the reso lution passed by vote of 6 to 2. The question of making the new road from the bridges to meot the new Sandy Greek road was the next and only other matter taken np and it brought on a solid hoar and one half of discussion.
